Three months after scheduled matches against Washington and Texas A&M were canceled when they both advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championship, the 26th-ranked Baylor women (15-8) will get another chance to play the Huskies and Aggies in the NCAA Tournament.
Earning an NCAA Tournament bid for the second-straight year and 23rd time overall, the Bears will face 37th-ranked Washington (14-11) in the first round at 10 a.m. Friday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
No. 7 national seed Texas A&M (30-1) plays Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (22-3) in the other first-round match at 1 p.m. Friday, with the winners advancing to Saturday's second-round match at 1 p.m.
"We just have to focus on the things that we can control and just bring our attitude, gratitude and our effort," said Baylor coach Joey Scrivano, whose team is 5-7 against NCAA Tournament teams. "You go after big goals, and sometimes you fall short. But ultimately, we still have our biggest goal ahead of. And that's what we're focused on."
In the rankings, senior Alicia Herrero Linana is 106th in singles and No. 7 in doubles with fellow senior Mel Krywoj.
After two regular-season wins over Kansas, the Bears lost to Kansas, 4-1, in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals in Fort Worth just six days after pushing fourth-seeded Texas, 4-3, in a Senior Day matchup in Waco.
"Honestly, there are always benefits when you fall short," Scrivano said. "It makes you examine everything you're doing and it definitely can bring some more focus. But more importantly, that's the past and now we just have to focus in on what's next."
Baylor is 3-2 all-time against Washington, including a 4-3 win last year in Waco. The Huskies upset then-No. 4 UCLA, 4-3, to earn a berth in the ITA National Indoor, but have lost seven of their last eight, falling to Washington State, 4-2, in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships.
The Bears are 21-28 against their former Big 12 and Southwest Conference rivals, Texas A&M, and lost to the Aggies five years ago in a second-round match in Waco.
"There have been times that they've really come alive, performed well and shown what great competitors they are," Scrivano said. "They're just going to have to tap into that. At this stage of the season, you're on the biggest stage. You have to be a performer, and our players know what that means, and they're going to do that."
WACO, Texas – The No. 26 Baylor women's tennis team punched its ticket to the 2022 NCAA Tournament, marking the 23rd time in program history the Bears will complete in the tournament and the 16th time under head coach Joey Scrivano.
The Bears (15-8) drew Washington (14-11) in the first round with the expected match time at 10 a.m. on Friday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. If Baylor advances, it will play the winner of No. 7 seed Texas A&M (30-1) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (22-3) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Baylor advances to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year after missing the tournament in 2019.
The Bears were originally scheduled to play Washington and Texas A&M this season, but both matches fell through. Baylor is 3-2 all-time against the Huskies, winning each of their last two contests. Against the Aggies, the Bears are 21-28.
