Student-Athletes from Soccer, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Tennis and Football selected as February Champions of the Month
WACO, Texas – Haven Terry (soccer), Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (women's basketball), Tadeas Paroulek (men's tennis) and Tyrone Brown (football) have been selected as the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) February Champions of the Month.
This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.
Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.
A junior from Missouri City, Texas, majoring in business, Terry has been heavily involved in character formation programs and has "taken initiative on her career development plan by meeting with her career coach and developing a resume and professional development plan," said character formation coordinator Malcolm Givens.
Terry, who assisted on the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Kansas in her second season with the Bears, said SACE has "given me the opportunity to transition into my college career as a student-athlete as smoothly as possible." Through academic advising, tutoring and character formation workshops, she has "learned all the tricks in the book to a balanced life for a student-athlete, thanks to the resources offered by SACE."
Already named Big 12 Freshman of the Week six times, Littlepage-Buggs has made an immediate impact with Nicki Collen's team, averaging 10.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game (second in the Big 12). After participating in a Character Formation Leadership Retreat in the fall, she has "used what she learned with her teammates and her peers," said assistant academic coach Justine Tam.
"Buggs," who led her high school to a 2022 state championship, has "gone out of her way to take advantage of her resources to get extra help with assignments and is getting ahead of her classes," Tam said. "SACE provides a helpful and fun environment to help me balance school," Buggs said, "and also to have someone like Justine who is always there to keep me on task while still having fun."
On pace to finish up a double major in political science and economics in May, Paroulek is "the true definition of a Baylor student-athlete," academic coach Khalek Shepherd said. A junior athletically who transferred from TCU after the 2021 season, "Teddy" plans to pursue his MBA after earning his undergrad degree.
After winning MOP honors at last year's Big 12 Championship playing No. 5 singles, he has moved up to the top of the lineup this spring and is 6-1 in singles and 6-0 in doubles with freshman Zsombor Velcz. A native of Prague, Czech Republic, Paroulek was named Big 12 Player of the Week after clinching both wins over Arizona State and ninth-ranked Florida State to qualify No. 10 Baylor for this week's ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Brown, a sophomore from Orange, Texas "puts forth his best effort in the classroom and always stays on top of his work," said Molly Ann Walke, associate director of learning support. A first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection in the fall, he excelled on special teams and as a reserve linebacker, playing in 12 games and making 18 tackles.
Majoring in health, kinesiology and leisure studies, Brown said he is "blessed with this opportunity and grateful for SACE and Baylor's commitment to excellence by pushing and supporting me athletically and academically. I am committed to being the best version of myself as I strive each day to excel on and off the field." Additionally, he has served in the community and recently volunteered at the Humane Society with some of his teammates.
