WACO, Texas – Baylor guards
Adam Flagler and
Keyonte George were named top-10 candidates for the 2023 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, as announced Tuesday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
With George and Flagler, who was also named to the list a season ago, BU is the only school to have multiple players on the list. Kansas' Gradey Dick gives the Big 12 three representatives. Houston's Marcus Sasser, Illinois' Terrence Shannon Jr., Marshall's Taevion Kinsey, Miami's Isaiah Wong, NC State's Terquavion Smith, Tennessee's Santiago Vescovi and UConn's Jordan Hawkins also made the top-10.
A preseason All-Big 12 selection, Flagler is the midst of a stellar senior season where he ranks seventh in the country in assist-turnover ratio (3.09) and ranks fifth in the Power Five in three-point shooting percentage (.421). Additionally, he leads the Big 12 in three-pointers per game (2.67), ranks third in assists per game, ninth in points per game (15.1), 10th in field goal % (.416).
George was named the Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year and has lived up to that billing. The Lewisville, Texas, native ranks third among Division I freshman, averaging 17.2 points per game, including 32 points at West Virginia — the most since LaceDarius Dunn set the freshman record with 38 points against Texas Tech in 2008. George leads the Big 12 in three-pointers made (58) and ranks third in three-point percentage (.347). His nine 20-point games are the most by a freshman since Aaron Bruce had nine in 2004-2005.
Fans can support their favorite players in the remaining rounds by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, February 10, on hoophallawards.com. The fan vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In March, five finalists will be presented to West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Jerry West Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2023 Jerry West Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
Previous winners of the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award are Johnny Davis, Wisconsin (2022), Chris Duarte, Oregon (2021), Myles Powell, Seton Hall (2020), RJ Barrett, Duke (2019), Carsen Edwards, Purdue (2018), Malik Monk, Kentucky (2017), Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (2016) and D'Angelo Russell, Ohio State (2015).
