The Bears moved to 8-6 on the year with loss against Sun Devils, win over Lopes
PHOENIX – After a 4-0 setback to the nationally-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (9-2), the Baylor women's tennis team (8-6) bounced back with a 5-2 victory over the Grand Canyon Lopes on Saturday night.
"Tonight's win over Grand Canyon was a great team win," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We love the way the team responded all day and fought until the very end. We showed a lot of character in the match against Grand Canyon, and we're really proud of Alina's resiliency in her match."
In the first match of the day, the Sun Devils quickly secured the 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, as Liubov Kostenko and Brooke Thompson continued chipped away at their deficit on No. 3. ASU held on for the 6-4 win to earn the doubles point, despite a 5-5 tie between Isabella Harvison and Anita Sahdiieva with #14 Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkovic on No. 1.
A pair of ranked matchups highlighted No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The Sun Devils went 6-3, 6-0 on court No. 6 to take an early 2-0 lead in the match, before straight-set wins on courts one and three secured the 4-0 victory for Arizona State.
In the nightcap, the Lopes took a 1-0 lead with the doubles point, but Sahdiieva and Danielle Tuhten quickly secured wins on No. 3 and No. 6 singles to put the Bears ahead. A 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win by Kostenko on No. 4 extended Baylor's advantage, before Grand Canyon responded on court five to cut into its deficit.
Shcherbinina fought for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position to clinch the match for the Bears, before a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory by Harvison on No. 1 sealed the 5-2 win for BU.
The Bears open Big 12 play next weekend at home, hosting Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. on Friday (March 10) and Oklahoma at 1 p.m. on Sunday (March 12).
