Bouncing back from being swept by No. 1-ranked Oklahoma, the 18th-ranked Baylor softball team scored in three of the first four innings in knocking off Texas State, 3-0, Wednesday night in a game that was called after five innings due to a tornado warning.
Freshman pitcher RyLee Crandall was taking her warm-up pitches in the top of the sixth inning when the tornado warning sirens went off and the officials suspended and later called the game. Moved up to a 3 p.m. start to try to beat the rain, the game took a little over 1 ½ hours to complete.
Shaylon Govan provided all the offense the Bears (35-13) would need with an opposite-field solo home run to right-center field in the first inning and a bloop double down the right-field line in the third to score McKenzie Wilson after a leadoff walk.
Sophomore Kaci West (7-2) tossed three no-hit innings, walking just one and facing the minimum number of batters thanks to an unusual double play.
After Anna Jones led off the second with a walk, Karmyn Bass laid down a sac bunt and was thrown out at first base by catcher Zadie LaValley. Then, second baseman Presleigh Pilon wheeled and gunned down Jones at third when she tried to take the extra base. Early crisis averted.
Texas State starting pitcher Jessica Mullins (16-9) struck out three of the first six batters she faced (six total) and worked a 1-2-3 second. But Govan's 10th blast of the year came with two out in the first to give BU the lead, then she came through again with two out in the third on an RBI bloop double just out of the reach of first baseman JJ Smith.
Making her home debut and first appearance since February, sophomore pitcher Ava Knoll wiggled out of a no-out, two-on hole with back-to-back fielder's choice grounders to third and a groundout to second. Texas State spoiled Baylor's no-hit bid when Piper Randolph ripped a leadoff single up the middle in leading off the fourth.
Tacking on an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame, Ana Watson lined a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then, the Bobcat shortstop overthrew first on Josie Bower's grounder, with Watson scoring from second.
The Bears threatened again in the fifth, with singles by Wilson and Sydney Collazos putting runners on the corner with two out. But relief pitcher Presley Glende retired Watson on a foul pop-up to the rightfielder.
Back in the circle, Crandall worked a 1-2-3 fifth to close out the Bobcats (29-20-1) and help Baylor snap a three-game losing streak heading into a weekend series at Iowa State (19-27, 2-10).
The Bears have two remaining series in conference play, traveling to Ames, Iowa, to meet the Cyclones on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, then playing a split series with the University of Texas that concludes with games at 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, May 6-7, at Getterman Stadium.
WACO, Texas - No. 18 Baylor Softball defeated Texas State, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at Getterman Stadium.
The Bears, now 35-13 on the season, won it in five innings after the game was called in the top or the sixth inning due to a tornado warning.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears got off to a hot start when Kaci West and the Baylor defense sat the Bobcats down in order in the first inning before taking the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Shaylon Govan launched her 10th home run of the season over the fence in right-center field and gave Baylor the 1-0 lead.
After a leadoff walk in the top of the second, the Bears capitalized on a 2-4-7 sacrifice-bunt double play that erased the runner.
The Bears got on the board again in the bottom of the third after McKenzie Wilson walked and Govan brought her home with a double down the right-field line.
Baylor worked out of a jam in the top of the fourth, when the Bobcats got their first two runners on base with a single and a walk. Back-to-back fielder's choice grounders got the lead runner out at third before a groundout to second base ended the threat.
Ana Watson led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Josie Bower reached on an error and advanced to second, as Watson came around to score after the ball was called dead.
With the 3-0 lead, the Bears set the Bobcats down in order in the fifth. Singles by Ashlyn Wachtendorf and Sydney Collazos put runners on the corner in the bottom half of the inning, but the Bears couldn't push across another run.
With the first batter in the top of the sixth in the batter's box, the tornado sirens on campus sounded and the game was called off due to tornado warnings in the area. With the game through five complete, the game was called complete and the Bears won, 3-0.
