Road to individual tennis titles revealed for next week’s championship in Waco
WACO, Texas – Draws for the 2024 NCAA DI Men's and Women's Singles and Doubles Championships, held Nov. 19-24 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, were revealed on Saturday evening by the NCAA office.
The individual championships, held separately from the spring team championships for the first of two years in a pilot program, will be streamed live on ESPN+ with commentary from Cracked Racquets. Action begins at the Hurd with the first round of singles on Tuesday morning while doubles starts on Wednesday morning. Each draw will advance one round per day, culminating in the crowning of champions on Sunday, November 24th.
The Baylor men's tennis squad, coached by Michael Woodson, will be represented by Devin Badenhorst and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen in the singles draw and by two doubles parings in Marko Miladinovic/Brostrom Poulsen and Zsombor Velcz/Badenhorst. Velcz is also the third alternate in the singles draw.
In singles, Badenhorst will play NC State's Martin Borisiouk and Brostrom Poulsen will see Princeton's Top Nidunjianzan in the first round. For the doubles draw, Miladinovic and Brostrom Poulsen will face off against Middle Tennessee's Ondrej Horak and Karim Al-Amin, Brostrom Poulsen's former squad, while Velcz and Badenhorst will open playing Aadarsh Tripathi and Alexander Hoogmartens from UCLA.
Announced last week, Miladinovic and Brostrom Poulsen are the national No. 2 seed in the championship, while Velcz and Badenhorst are one of the 5-8 seeds. Baylor was the only school seeded twice in the men's doubles draw.
For the Baylor women's tennis team, coached by Joey Scrivano, Cristina Tiglea and Luibov Kostenko will represent the Bears in the doubles draw after taking advantage of their final shot at qualification in the NCAA Central Sectional Championships.
Tiglea and Kostenko are up against USC's Lily Fairclough and Grace Piper in the first round of the tournament.
Also announced on Monday, Tiglea and Kostenko were given a 5-8 seed, joining TCU's Otway/Pascual as ranked entries for the women's doubles championship.
Between the men's and women's programs, three Bears have hoisted an NCAA singles champion trophy, with Benedikt Dorsch being Baylor's first individual tennis champion in 2004, followed by Zuzana Zemenova and Benjamin Becker sweeping the titles in 2005.
Tickets are still available through the Baylor athletics ticket office.
