WACO, Texas –Ryan McGuyre isn't about to lose sleep over why his 17th-ranked Baylor volleyball team (18-7, 10-4) dropped a few spots in the RPI rankings after splitting a pair of matches last week in the Sunflower State.
"I can't worry about the things we can't control," said McGuyre, whose Bears will host Texas Tech (13-13, 5-9) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ferrell Center, just two weeks after sweeping the Red Raiders in Lubbock.
Sitting outside the top 16, which hosts the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament, Baylor will close with home matches against Tech and Houston and road matchups with Cincinnati and West Virginia.
"The best thing we can do is 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0," McGuyre said of potentially sweeping four teams that are in the bottom half of the Big 12 standings. "You've got to market stuff a little bit, but that would put us at 9-1 in our last 10. It puts us in at least third in the Big 12, maybe second, depending on what happens with the rest of the matches. . . . There is still work to be done these next two weeks."
The Bears are coming off a 3-0 loss to 12th-ranked Kansas, which essentially eliminated them from a Big 12 championship. Ninth-ranked Arizona State (26-2, 14-1) and Kansas (22-3, 13-2) have separated themselves from the pack, with Baylor and Utah a full three games out of first.
"I don't think (Arizona State has) anybody on the radar that's going to challenge them," McGuyre said. "Kansas is still really good, but they're kind of hitting the tougher part of their schedule here on the back end. . . . Really, the way our travel is for everyone, it's hard to win on the road and teams are taking dingers."
Baylor took one of those "dingers," with Saturday's 3-0 sweep snapping the Bears' eight-match winning streak.
"We slowed them down, but we didn't keep our offense explosive enough," McGuyre said of the Bears hitting just .162 with 30 kills and 14 errors on 99 attempts. "We outblocked them, digs were even, we had less errors, but the kill percentage just wasn't there."
Elise McGhee (15) and Kendal Murphy (11) recorded double-digit kills and the Bears hit .277 in their win over Kansas in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 28-26, on Nov. 6 in Lubbock. Middle blockers Victoria Davis and Alicia Andrew combined for 12 block assists in holding the Red Raiders to a .116 attack percentage.
McGuyre said all four middle blockers "have been crushing it," but senior Manuela Bibinbe has played in just one set in each of the last five matches.
"That is probably our steadiest position," McGuyre said. "Manuel had some knee issues, but I think they're a little bit different, too. AG (Ava Grace Haggard), leader, quick off the floor, heavy arm. Ali Andrews, just consistent blocking and hitting. Tori has been up there in blocks per set and has been there. And then Manu gives us a little bit more offense in what she's doing."
During Baylor's eight-match winning streak, junior opposite Allie Sczech said "we're starting to get glimpses of so many good things coming together."
"That's just such a preview for what's yet to come still," she said. "I think we'll reap the harvest within these next four matches that we have but goes also further down the road in the tournament."
Wednesday's match will be streamed by ESPN+, with Pete Sousa and Camryn Freiberg calling the action.
