Bears earn Athlete, Freshman of the Week honors
WACO, Texas – Baylor acrobatics & tumbling earned two of the three possible weekly awards from the NCATA, the organization announced Wednesday, after the first two weeks of competition.
Senior Riley Chimwala was named Athlete of the Week while Emily Bott earned Freshman of the Week after their performances in the win over Texas Lutheran on February 3 and over No. 11 Mary Hardin-Baylor on February 11.
Chimwala earns her first Athlete of the Week designation after earning three Freshman of the Week honors and one Specialist of the Week accolade in previous seasons. The base from Plano, Texas, competed in 20 heats and two team events across the two meets. The senior helped BU to score a 9.8 or higher in 11 heats, including a 9.90 in the compulsory and open pyramid heats. She was instrumental in the team event, helping the Bears to score above a 96.00 in both wins.
Bott becomes just the fifth different Baylor student-athlete to earn the Freshman accolade and seventh honoree overall. The top and tumbler from East Slip, N.Y., competed in 14 heats across the two meets. She helped Baylor score a 9.5 or higher in 10 heats overall, including a 9.8 and 9.9 in the aerial tumbling passes in the back-to-back meets. She also helped the Bears score a 9.8 in compulsory toss.
The Bears have a week of practice and rest before hitting the mats again on Feb. 25 against Oregon in the annual "Go Gold" meet. The rematch of the 2023 national championship will also be the Cub Club event of the month for Baylor. The meet is slated to start at 3 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
