Hurdler wins eighth indoor newcomer honor in Baylor history
IRVING, Texas – Baylor track and field hurdler Demario Prince has been named Big 12 Outstanding Men's Freshman of the Year for the 2024 indoor season, the conference announced Thursday.
In his first year in Waco from Spanish Town, Jamaica, the 60-meter hurdler posted a 7.72 in his very first race to win the McFerrin-12 Degree Invitational title, a mark that ranked him as the fourth-best ever to do it at Baylor after just one week.
Finding success at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Prince went 7.76 and 7.69 at the Corky Classic before breaking the program record with two identical 7.62-second marks for fourth at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Entering the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships as the lone freshman in the men's and women's 16-entry fields, Prince is seeded 11th and will run in the national semifinals on Friday, March 8, at 4:05 p.m. CT. A national champion will be crowned in the final round the following day at 3:40 p.m. CT.
Prince joins Brandon Couts (1998), Tre Gardner (1999), Jacob Norman (2006), Felix Obi (2013), Wil London III (2016), Maxwell Willis (2017) and KC Lightfoot (2019) as the eighth Bear to win the honor and shares the 2024 award with Oklahoma State's Denis Kipngetich.
