FORT WORTH, Texas – After another weather-shortened day of the TCU Alumni Invitational, Baylor track and field officially rung in the 2024 outdoor season with the full team at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex. The Bears secured first and second place finishes from the women's squad in the 4x100-meter relay and shot put.
THE RUNDOWN
The day opened with a title on the track from the women's 4x100-meter relay squad. Running ¾ of the All-American group from 2023,
Tiriah Kelley,
Imaobong Uko,
Bria Bullard and
Michaela Francois put up a 44.65 to open the season and win the event.
Winning her second silver medal in as many days,
Makayla Long threw 51-2 ¼ for the runner-up spot in the women's shot put. The junior finished only behind Oklahoma's Tuane Silver.
Southern Arkansas transfer
Carter Cheek ran his first race in the green and gold and pocketed a fourth-place finish. The Waco native bettered his personal-best mark to 14.36 and was second among collegiate competitors.
There were four Bears featured in the women's 1,500 meters.
Abby Morris led the BU contingent in 24
th place, ahead of
Kat Helmer and
Kira Dietrich back-to-back in 26
th and 27
th places, respectively.
Ryan Vasquez, running in her collegiate debut, was at the end of the pack in 30
th.
Nicholi Brown was the highest-finishing Bear in the men's 400 meters, taking ninth, ahead of freshman
Jack Jackson in 11
th.
In the final race taking place moments before lightning, Francois was able to compete in her 100-meters and finish fifth.
