STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 34 Baylor women's tennis, the No. 6 seed, took down 11th seeded West Virginia in the first round of the 2024 Big 12 Championships, hosted by Oklahoma State at Greenwood Tennis Center.
Baylor (17-11) rallied past West Virginia (14-12) in the first round, using a strong singles showing after the Mountaineers won the doubles point.
"In the end, it's just character. This is building character, and ultimately that's what college tennis is about," Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I'm really excited about this team moving forward and I'm really proud of them."
The Mountaineers got an early head start in doubles with Baylor using new pairs due to injury. The teams split courts three, a 6-3 score for West Virginia, and two, a 6-2 decision for the Bears, when the Mountaineers clinched the point on court one, 6-4.
Baylor's Miska Kadleckova, ranked No. 117, came storming out the gate in singles, quickly notching a decisive 6-2, 6-0 win on court one. It improved her to 16-4 on the year and 15-4 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. West Virginia responded with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court five to regain the lead, when Liubov Kostenko defeated Michaela Kucharova 6-2, 6-3 to retie the match at 2-apiece.
The remaining three courts were a three-way race to win by the Bears, that saw Danielle Tuhten win first, a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six, and Zuzanna Kubacha follow with the match-clinching 6-4, 6-3 win on court four. Isabella Harvison's match remained unfinished at just one game away, 7-6(4), 5-0.
Next up, the Bears will take on the winner of a match between the 3-seed Oklahoma Sooners and the 14-seed Houston Cougars on Thursday at 3 p.m. The entirety of the championship will be available to stream on ESPN+.
