Bears cruise past Cardinals, 15-3, to clinch series
Baylor Bear Insider
WACO, Texas - Since a rough outing against Texas two weeks ago, Baylor redshirt freshman Collin McKinney has been close to unhittable in his last two starts, allowing just one earned run on three hits and four walks with 20 strikeouts over 11.1 innings.
"It was fun to see Collin go out there and get after it from the first pitch of the game on, to have dominant stuff," Baylor coach Mitch Thompson said of McKinney (3-3), who became the first BU pitcher in 16 years to register 10 strikeouts in back-to-back games in Saturday's 15-3 win over Incarnate Word.
McKinney, who threw 90 pitches in getting through five innings, said the key has been "just sticking to the plan, trusting my stuff and knowing that I can go out there and do what I did today."
"You're just going out there and doing what you love," he said. "It's great that I had a good start last weekend. Carried that into today and good things happened."
On a day when McKinney didn't really need that much help, he got it in droves with an 18-hit offensive attack as the Bears (13-17) extended their winning streak to a Thompson era-best five in a row and clinched their fifth-straight home series.
"The confidence builds, and it just does," Thompson said. "When you're playing well – which we are, we're getting good pitching performances – good things happen."
Extending his on-base streak to a team-best 22-consecutive games, Wesley Jordan went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs. His first, a two-run shot in the first inning, was measured at 476 feet to match the absolute bomb he hit against Texas Tech.
"I was a little excited seeing the wind blowing out," said Jordan, who is leading the team with five homers. "You always like to see that as a power guy. Just get a nice fly ball and see what it can do."
Hunter Teplanszky added a solo homer in the first, and then the Bears tacked on with three two-out runs in the second inning. After Tyriq Kemp and Ty Johnson walked, consecutive singles by Jordan and Daniel Altman gave McKinney a 6-0 lead when he went back to the mound in the top of the third.
After striking out five of the first six batters he faced and taking a perfect game into the fourth, McKinney ran into trouble when former Baylor player Cam Caley led off the fourth with a high pop fly that fell in left field for a bloop single. The Cardinals loaded the bases with a hit batter and walk and scored two runs when Altman made an error at second base on a potential double-play grounder.
"Things like that happen," said McKinney, who stranded two runners on base with a pair of strikeouts. "Baseball's not perfect. You just have to go out there and compete and just get out of the inning."
Batting around in the bottom half of the inning, Baylor responded with five runs on seven hits and upped its lead to 11-2. By the time McKinney excited, the Bears had an 11-run lead thanks to Jordan's second homer of the day leading off the fifth and an RBI groundout by Zach Mazoch.
"You guys can see, the bats are picking up, the pitching is picking up, the bullpen is awesome," McKinney said. "Everything seems to be going the right direction."
Baylor tacked on a run in the seventh on Jack Johnson's first-career homer over the batter's eye in center field and scored again in the eighth when Kade Fletcher had a two-out double and came around on two wild pitches.
The bullpen threw up three more zeroes on the scoreboard before the Cardinals got a single run in the ninth on a walk and two-out single by Sterling Sutcliffe off reliever Jared Matheson, who pitched for the first time since March 9. Gabe Craig, who hadn't seen action since Feb. 28, worked around a couple baserunners to pitch a scoreless eighth inning.
"Those guys and their depth will help our (bullpen)," Thompson said. "Gabe gives us a guy who can come in there and get anybody out, throwing the ball extremely hard. Matheson's going to give us an opportunity to lengthen out the bullpen, and it should help us out on Tuesdays as well. So, it was big to get those guys back. That ought to make everyone on the pitching staff a little more excited, because it just continues to let us handle things the right way."
Baylor goes for its second series sweep of the season when the Bears face the Cardinals at 1 p.m. Sunday in the series finale.
WACO, Texas – In another offensive outpouring, Baylor baseball cruised past Incarnate Word, 15-3, on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, clinching the series and picking up its fifth win in a row.
BU (13-17) pounded out a season-high 18 hits with 10 different Bears recording at least one knock, including three players in junior outfielder Wesley Jordan, senior infielder Daniel Altman and junior infielder Hunter Teplanszky who tallied three-hit games. Jordan homered twice on the day, his fourth and fifth blasts of the season, leading the charge of Baylor's four-homer attack.
Not to be outdone, redshirt freshman right-hander Collin McKinney was brilliant on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits, two walks and striking out 10 for the second start in a row. McKinney's back-to-back 10-strikeout starts are the first by a Bear since Kendal Volz did so in his last start of 2007 and first of 2008.
THE RUNDOWN
After a three-up, three-down top of the first, Baylor put three runs up right away on UIW (15-14) with Jordan's two-run bomb and a solo shot by Teplanszky in the bottom of the first. The Bears wasted no time adding to their total, plating another three runs in the bottom of the second on a pair of singles by Jordan and Altman after McKinney fanned the side in the top half.
Neither side scored in the third, though the Cardinals would scratch two across in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice and an error. BU answered with five runs in the home half on seven hits, as Teplanszky, sophomore catcher Zach Mazoch, fifth-year senior infielder Cole Posey, junior catcher Cortlan Castle and redshirt junior outfielder Enzo Apodaca each tallied RBI singles.
McKinney finished his day with two more punchouts in a scoreless fifth, preceding Jordan's second round-tripper of the afternoon which made it 12-2. Mazoch picked up another RBI on a fielder's choice later in the inning, extending Baylor's lead to 13-2.
Sophomore southpaw reliever Ethan Calder came on to pitch two scoreless frames and BU added tallies in each the bottom of the seventh and eighth, as redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Johnson crushed his first-career home run over the batter's eye and a run-scoring wild pitch accounted for the final Baylor runs of the day.
Redshirt junior righty Gabe Craig and senior right-hander Jared Matheson each made their first appearances in nearly a month in seeing out the series-clinching victory.
