WACO, Texas – Even facing four very different pitchers, the No. 21 Baylor softball team scored in every inning and had a combined 20 hits and free bases (walks and hit batters) to run-rule Texas Tech, 11-3, Sunday afternoon and clinch its second-straight Big 12 series at Getterman Stadium.
"I think we sent the message that we're not comfortable and we're not going to let them take the momentum they got in the fourth inning," said senior catcher Sydney Collazos, who went 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs, tying her career highs. "That's how we need to play all the time, as if it's a new game every inning. We did a great job of making each inning count."
After splitting a pair of one-run games, walking off Saturday's 2-1 win with a two-out RBI single by Kaci West, the Bears (21-14, 5-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
"We really needed to score some runs," Baylor coach Glenn Moore said. "I've been preaching that the percentages were in our favor, and this is going to have to go our way eventually. Today, it did. Maybe it gives me a little more credibility. . . . Human nature is, 'here we go again.' And you start finger-pointing like humans do when they're not having success. Having some success rejuvenates everybody."
Capitalizing on a pair of first-inning walks, the Bears scored on RBI singles by Collazos and Presleigh Pilon and a throwing error by the pitcher on Leah Cran's excuse-me tapper back to the circle.
The only cloud on an otherwise sunny day came in the second inning, when Shaylon Govan suffered an apparent knee injury when she doubled to the gap in right-center field for the Bears' only extra-base hit of the game. Helped off the field, Govan was walking around after the game and "the examination shows all positives."
"It scares you to death," Moore said. "I think her knee popped, and it scared her a little bit rounding first base, not as much going into second base. She's one that we can't afford to lose right now."
Collazos drove in pinch-runner Caroline Rowatt with a single up the middle, but the Bears left the bases loaded after a pair of walks and left 10 runners stranded in the game.
Baylor starter Aliyah Binford (6-8) took a no-hitter into the fourth, but the Red Raiders (24-12, 4-8) strung together four hits and plated three runs to close the gap to 5-3.
Instead of a "here we go again" attitude, Baylor answered right back with a two-run single by West in the fourth and two runs in the fifth on singles by Ana Watson and Collazos and a squeeze bunt by Cran that pushed the lead back to 9-3.
"It's just the fight in this group," Collazos said. "We've faced a lot of adversity, so it took a while to pry that out of us, but that's what we know our offense is capable of doing. So, that doesn't surprise me. I'm hoping that we continue to play that like in the upcoming series."
Pitching for the third-straight day, RyLee Crandall threw two no-hit innings and retired the last six batters in a row after a leadoff walk in the fifth.
"RyLee, throwing as many pitches as she threw yesterday, I sent her a message this morning and said this has to be like a Super Regional. All hands on deck; you've got to be ready to go,," Moore said. "Aliyah showed a little fatigue, and we were able to go to the bullpen and have RyLee come in. Unlike what we've done the last few weeks where we've struggled out of the bullpen, she did a great job today."
Ending the game by the eight-run mercy rule, the Bears opened the sixth inning with a leadoff walk by West and single through the right side by Ashlyn Wachtendorf. After a fielder's choice grounder, Watson and Abi Flores followed with RBI singles to make it 11-3.
"It's very important that we backed up (Saturday's 2-1 win) with any kind of win," Moore said. "To make it a statement win in all aspects of the game . . . they are a team that has been hitting really well. For our pitchers, who were somewhat depleted today – and their bullpen fresh – I'm happy with both sides. For our pitchers to be able to squelch that offense is pretty impressive, to say the least."
Collazos and Watson, who reached base all three times after subbing in for Govan, combined for half of Baylor's 10 hits. Binford and Crandall threw a combined four-hitter, holding down an explosive Tech offense that came in averaging almost seven runs per game.
The Bears will face UTSA (12-29) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in San Antonio before a split series against fifth-ranked Texas (31-6, 11-4) that starts Friday with a 6:30 p.m. game at Getterman Stadium.
WACO, Texas – No. 21 Baylor Softball dominated Texas Tech, 11-3, Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium, walking off the Red Raiders with a run rule in the sixth inning.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears' offense came to play in Sunday's rubber match, with BU starting the game with three runs in the bottom of the first.
After the Bears allowed a single baserunner in the top of the first, Abi Flores and Shaylon Govan drew back-to-back walks in the bottom half of the inning to put two on. Sydney Collazos, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, then singled up the middle to bring home pinch-runner Caroline Rowatt to score the Bears' first run. Leah Cran then reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed the runners to advance before Flores came home to score on an error. With the 2-0 advantage, Presleigh Plon then singled to put the Bears up by three runs.
Baylor added a run in the bottom of the second after Govan hit a two-out double and Flores walked to put two on for Collazos, who ripped another single up the middle for her second RBI of the day.
Texas Tech threatened with a runner on second in the top of the third, but a pop-up ended the threat.
To lead off the bottom of the third, Taylor Strain was hit by a pitch and Kaci West reached on a throwing error that moved Strain to third. Strain then came home to score when Emily Hott reached after a fielder's choice, but West was caught in a rundown at home plate and was tagged out.
The Red Raiders were able to put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth after a couple of timely hits and a wild pitch.
Not happy with the two-run lead, Baylor answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a two-RBI single off the bat of West.
After RyLee Crandall entered to pitch in the top of the fifth, she allowed a leadoff walk before retiring the last two batters of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
Baylor added its eighth and ninth runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Collazos roped her third single of the day and Cran reached on a sacrifice bunt fielder's choice where Ana Watson was able to beat the throw home.
Crandall retired the Red Raiders in order in the top of the sixth before the Bears were able to secure the victory early. After a leadoff walk to West, Ashlyn Wachtendorf singled and Hott reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out. Watson then singled up the middle to make it a 10-3 ballgame before Flores singled through the right side to put the Bears up by eight runs and secure the walk-off run-rule win in six innings.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Glenn Moore on the game …
"I thought it was a very well-played game. Saw a lot of different looks and adjusted well. It's a game of adjustments. I said that earlier in a mid-game interview. That's what we've not done well the last few weeks. I was really happy with what we did. They forced them to swing at a lot of strikes, they swung at a lot of balls out of the zone and had good production and timely hits for a change. A couple of bad-luck, like Aliyah Binford's line drive up the middle where nobody's supposed to be. We've seen a lot of that this year, but I was really happy with our offense today."
Sydney Collazos on scoring in every inning …
"It was huge, I think we sent the message that we're not comfortable and we're not going to let them take the momentum they got in the fourth inning. That's how we need to play all the time, as if it's a new game every inning. We did a great job of making each inning count."

The Bears will head on the road for a nonconference matchup against UTSA on Tuesday, April 9, at 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
