Sooners bats prove too much for Bears to overcome
NORMAN, Okla. – Baylor baseball dropped both ends of a doubleheader with No. 17 Oklahoma on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Okla., 9-1 and 19-7.
After posting their second and third first-inning leads of the weekend, the Bears were once again unable to hold down the Sooners' offense, as the home squad scored nine unanswered to take the opener and rallied from down 5-1 to finish off the visitors in a seven-inning run-rule in the nightcap.
BU's offense racked up 17 hits on the day and received multi-hit performances from five different players, including junior outfielder Ty Johnson, junior infielder Tyriq Kemp, senior infielder Cole Posey, junior catcher Cortlan Castle and senior catcher Harrison Caley.
THE RUNDOWN
GAME ONE – Oklahoma 9, Baylor 1
The Bears got on the board right away as Johnson singled in the top of the first and wheeled around from first base to score on senior infielder Daniel Altman's double to the right-field wall. A pair of two-out knocks was no problem for sophomore lefty starter Ethan Calder on the bump, as BU took a 1-0 lead into the second.
Baylor threatened for more but was unable to add to the lead after loading the bases in the top of the second. Calder worked a three-up, three-down frame in the home half to maintain the one-run advantage.
Sophomore designated hitter Zach Mazoch doubled in the top of the third, sending junior infielder Hunter Teplanszky racing for the plate, but a 9-4-2 relay cut down BU's runner at home to prevent another tally.
Calder continued to cruise, retiring six in a row and nine of 10 from the second inning through the fifth, but that's when the tides turned as OU chased a pair across. A two-out balk plated the Sooners' first run and was promptly followed by an RBI single, with Oklahoma taking its first lead of the afternoon.
In the sixth, OU scored three runs on three hits and two walks to extend its lead out to 5-1. All the while, Sooners starter Kyson Witherspoon found his groove on the mound and stranded a Baylor baserunner in each of the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
An eighth-inning grand slam put the exclamation point on the doubleheader opener, as Oklahoma pulled away at 9-1.
GAME TWO – Oklahoma 19, Baylor 7 [7 inn.]
In the nightcap, Baylor once again wasted no time getting the offense going as Castle's RBI double opened the scoring in the top of the first. The Bears added another tally on Altman's sacrifice fly and took a 2-0 lead into the home half of the opening frame.
After the Sooners got one back in the bottom of the first, BU responded with a three spot in the top of the second. Teplanszky led things off with a solo blast, then a pair of infield singles and a stolen base by Kemp set up redshirt junior outfielder Enzo Apodaca for an RBI groundout. The Bears kept running as sophomore outfielder Caleb Bergman swiped third and scored on a throwing error by the Sooners catcher, extending the lead to 5-1.
However, Oklahoma put up six runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-5 lead, chasing BU starter redshirt freshman righty Collin McKinney from the mound.
Once the dust settled and both sides went scoreless in the third, it was back to the offense in the fourth. Castle's two-strike sacrifice fly preceded a two-out RBI single from Caley, knotting the scoreline at 7-7. But another six-spot for OU pushed it to 13-7 after the Sooners pounded out six hits, including an inside-the-park grand slam.
Six more runs came across in the fifth for the Sooners, all with two outs, extending the lead to 19-7. From there, Oklahoma put up a couple zeros and finished off the weekend sweep in run-rule fashion.
