Both Bears score in first career NCAA Outdoor Championship meet
EUGENE, Ore. – The Baylor track and field women completed their first day of NCAA Championship competition on Thursday, with two earned All-America honors and one advancement to the finals scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Alexis Brown (long jump) and Molly Haywood (pole vault) each recorded fifth place finishes in their event finals at historic Hayward Field after the women's 4x100 earned an automatic 'Q' in the ninth-overall position.
THE RUNDOWN
Brown led the field after one attempt on Thursday before recording her best mark of the day, a 21-4 ¼, on attempt No. 3 that propelled her to the event finals. After fouling jump No. 4, Brown went 20-10 and 21-2 ¾ on the final two attempts before ending her day in fifth place for the fifth all-time outdoor All-America honor.
Haywood started out the day by missing her first two attempts at 13-7 ¼ but found her rhythm on the third jump to then fly over 14-1 ¼ and 14-5 ¼ in just one try each. The freshman tied with Washington's freshman, Amanda Moll, in fifth place and is only the third Bear to earn All-America honors and the first to do so in her true-freshman season.
Nearly uprooted by a tricky first handoff, the women's 4x100-meter relay fought back to automatically secure their ticket to the final round with a second-place finish in Heat Three. Tiriah Kelley, Kayla Hunt, Brown and Michaela Francois ran a 43.34-second race in the preliminary round that was won by Ole Miss' 42.22, the best time in the nation this season.
WHAT'S NEXT
Nathaniel Ezekiel closes the Baylor men's season on Friday night in the 400-meter hurdle finals with a scheduled start time of 9:27 p.m. CT. Fans can watch his race on ESPN2.
