Rising sophomore earns first pro singles title
HILLCREST, South Africa – Baylor men's tennis rising sophomore Devin Badenhorst is having a career offseason, taking over the competition at the ITF M15 Hillcrest and winning the singles and doubles titles. This marks Badenhorst's first pro singles title in his career.
As a result of the Pretoria, South Africa, native's success, he earned his highest career professional singles ranking at No. 684.
In the singles final, Badenhorst defeated top-seeded and 387th-ranked Kris Van Wyk in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-4, to claim his title.
In doubles, Badenhorst teamed up with Baylor teammate Luc Koenig. The pair took down the No. 1 seed doubles team, Alec Beckley and Alexander Donski, in the first round, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. In the finals, Badenhorst and Koenig swept their No. 2 seed opponents Ishaque Eqbal and Aryan Shah, 6-3, 7-6(3).
In his freshman season, Badenhorst was named the ITA Texas Region Player to Watch after he earned a 14-6 singles record and 13-9 doubles record. He began his time at Baylor in January and rode a hot streak of eight singles matches won to start the spring season. The sophomore defeated rival TCU's Sebastian Gorzny (#30) in straight sets to earn his highest-ranked singles victory (3/10). Overall, Badenhorst tallied three ranked wins in singles in his first year.
Badenhorst led the Bears to their 26th consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and an 18-12 overall record this past season.
