Four WT and two MT athletes to compete in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Baylor tennis programs will be well represented at the ITA National Summer Championships, being held at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tennessee from August 10-13.
Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, Marko Miladinivoć, Sierra Berry, Kennedy Gibbs, Zuzanna Kubacha and Lauren Littell will be competing at the home of the Blues and will look to earn a multitude of prizes, including ITA All-American Wild Cards.
The singles and doubles champions will receive main draw wild cards while finalists will receive qualifying draw wild cards into one of the biggest qualifier tournaments for the NCAA Fall Individual Championships, which will be hosted at Baylor University.
Additional prizes include USTA Pro Circuit wild cards and $20,000 in total prize money.
Poulsen and Miladinović will both be competing in the men's open doubles and singles competitions. Both men's tennis athletes earned their spots this past summer as Poulsen won Week 2 of the ITA Summer Masters Series, while Miladinović captured the ITA Summer Circuit Title in Fort Worth.
"I am very excited to be playing in ITA National Summer Championship," said Miladinović. "I have been here in Waco with Oskar for month and half now. Our coaches had a very good program for us and vision on what we have to do to get better! We were practicing very hard and improving a lot, so I am very excited to see how that hard work will translate into matches. Whoever wins doubles or singles gets wild card main draw for All American in the fall, so that's amazing! I want to go out there and compete as hard as I can for Baylor and show the work I put in all summer! Oskar and I are playing doubles which is amazing, and I am very excited to play doubles with him!"
Kubacha, Gibbs, Berry and Littell will each fight through the singles bracket, while Berry/Gibbs and Kubacha/Littell suit up together for the doubles draw. Gibbs earned the automatic qualification from a finalist finish in the Waco Masters Series, while Berry was a semifinalist. Down the road in College Station, Kubacha took the singles title for a ticket to nationals and Littell was a finalist in the singles consolation bracket.
"Winning in College Station was really exciting because I haven't played many tournaments after spring season ended," said Kubacha. "I was going through it with joy and gratitude, and I really think that's what helped me perform so well. I really enjoy being on a tennis court and I cannot wait to compete again in summer nationals. It is really exciting that so many Bears qualified so we can represent Baylor and our team well, on top of supporting one another."
The road to the national championships for collegiate tennis run through Waco as Baylor is set to host NCAA Individual and Team National Championships for 2024 and 2025. For the first time, the NCAA committee decided that the individual and team championships will be split between the fall and the spring terms. The 2024 individual championships are set for Nov. 19-24, 2024, while the team tournaments will be held May 15-24, 2025.
