
WT Drops Hard Fought Battle to No. 12 Texas, 4-3

AUSTIN, Texas – Baylor women's tennis fell to No. 12 Texas, 4-3, in the second round of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears started down with Na Dong and Kennedy Gibbs losing on Court Two to Texas's Salma Drugdova and Carmen Herea, 6-4.
However, BU bounced back with the No. 13 pairing of Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea earning a 6-4 victory. Followed by Zuzanna Kubacha and Wenfei Yu coming back from a 4-2 defeciet to take a 7-6 (3) win to give Baylor the doubles point.
In singles, Kubacha was the first one to earn a victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Court Three, taking down Texas's No. 65 Ashton Bowers.
The Longhorns responded by taking three courts with victories on Courts One, Five and Six defeating Tiglea 6-3, 6-1, Gibbs 6-4, 6-4 and No. 118 Yu 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
No. 76 freshman Dong started off with a first set loss before coming back with a dominant 6-1 second set victory. In a hard fought third set Dong was able to take the win, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, and tie up the match 3-3.
On Court Two, Kubacha had a hard fought first set win before falling in the second set. In a back and forth battle in the third set, the Longhorn's Eszter Meri was able to pull out the 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory giving Texas their second victory of the season.

On the match…
I'm proud and excited for this team. They battled so hard today, showing their toughness, competitiveness and resilience every step of the way. These are high-character athletes who put the team first, constantly fighting for each other and pushing one another to improve. While this was a tough loss, I have no doubt we'll respond the right way and come back even stronger.

The Bears look to host Nebraska as the two face on Friday at noon.
