Bears host duo of matches at Hurd Tennis Center
WACO, Texas – The 25th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team readies to host Nebraska on Friday at noon and Denver on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor (2-1) holds the advantage over both Nebraska (4-0) and Denver (1-2), at 21-1 and 3-1 in all-time matches played, respectively.
The last time BU and Nebraska faced off was last season in March when the Bears kept their 20-win streak over the Huskers intact with a 4-1 victory in Lincoln, Neb. On Court Two, Liubov Kostenko earned a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory and on Five, Zuzanna Kubacha earned a dominant 6-2, 6-1 over Nebraska's Lucy Loy.
Also last season, the Bears hosted Denver and garnered a 4-2 victory on Feb. 23. All BU doubles teams took a dub including a dominant 6-0 performance from the pairing of Kubacha and Sierra Berry. In singles on Courts Three and Five, Kostenko and Kubacha earned victories for the Bears.
In the most recent coaches poll that was announced on Wednesday, Baylor was ranked 25th after a strong showing in Austin during ITA Kickoff Weekend where Baylor went 1-1 against BYU and then-No. 12 Texas.
Against Texas, The Bears started doubles off hot with the No. 13 pairing of Cristina Tiglea and Liubov Kostenko earning a 6-4 victory on Court One. On Court Two, Na Dong and Kennedy Gibbs fell 4-6 but Wenfei Yu and Kubacha answered with a comeback 7-6 (3) win on Court Three to give Baylor the doubles point.
In singles competition, Kubacha gained another point for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on Court 3. The Bears then fell on Courts Six, Five and One before, Dong responded with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 dub on Court 4 to tie up the match. The Longhorns won the match after a battle on Court 2 where Texas's Eszter Meri defeated Kostenko in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (6).
