Four Bears to compete at Hurd Tennis Center against SEC foes
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's tennis welcomes teams from across the South for the Big 12-SEC Challenge, being held Oct. 3-5 at the Hurd Tennis Center.
From the Big 12, student-athletes from Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, and Texas Tech will be competing. Representing the SEC are in-state opponents Texas and Texas A&M.
For Baylor, the four Bears of Calvin Baierl, Luc Koenig, Connor Van Schalkwyk, and Zsombor Velcz will take part in the weekend's competition. This will be Baierl's collegiate debut, while Koenig, Van Schalkwyk, and Velcz all competed at the ITA All-American Championships the week prior in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Van Schalkwyk went 4-2 on the week in Tulsa, defeating three ranked opponents, including a signature win over No. 38 Roan Jones of North Carolina in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Velcz also recorded a top-15 win at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center over No. 11 Benito Sanchez Martinez of Mississippi State in a dominant 6-3, 6-4 victory.
In doubles, the No. 28 duo of Van Schalkwyk and Velcz will be partnered, while Baierl and Koenig will pair together.
Friday's competition will begin at 1 p.m. CT at the Hurd Tennis Center. On Saturday, play will move to the Waco Regional Tennis Center, beginning at 9 a.m. CT. The final day of matches will take place Sunday at 9 a.m. CT back at the Hurd Tennis Center.
