Bears duo earn qualifying bid to 2025 NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Baylor men's tennis showcased another strong performance over the course of the five-day tournament at the ITA Texas Regional Championships with standout performances across the board, headlined by Zsombor Velcz and Connor Van Schalkwyk winning the doubles title to secure an automatic berth to the 2025 NCAA Individual Championships.
The doubles pair join teammate Devin Badenhorst in BU's additions to the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship, held at the USTA National Campus in Orlanda, Fla. from Nov. 18-23.
The No. 28-ranked duo dominated throughout the tournament, opening with an 8-3 win over Vila and Hernandez (UIW), followed by an 8-4 victory over Rice's No. 86-ranked pair Kapasi and Sarouk. In Monday's semifinal, Velcz and Van Schalkwyk downed Texas' Braswell and Burnett, 7-6 (3), 6-4, before clinching the championship on Tuesday with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Texas Tech's Arsic and Guglieri.
In singles, No. 60 Van Schalkwyk reached the semifinals after impressive wins over Santiago Serrano Huidboro (UTRGV), Gabriel Porras (Rice), and teammate Louis Bowden, before falling to No. 22 Trevor Svajda (SMU), 6-4, 6-2, just one spot away from earning a singles qualifying bid to NCAAs. No. 101 Alexandru Chirita advanced to the quarterfinals with a strong showing, including a three-set win over Texas A&M's Lathan Skrobarcek.
Bowden turned in a solid run of his own, picking up victories over Texas Tech's Thiago Guglieri, SMU's Georgi Georgiev, and Texas A&M's Ritesh Patil. Drew Hedgecoe also impressed, stringing together multiple wins from qualifying through the main draw, highlighted by a comeback three-set victory over TCU's Julian Alonso.
In doubles play, Badenhorst and Koenig, ranked No. 5 nationally, advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Coignet and Garmendia of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 8-4. Chirita and Bowden picked up a tiebreak win over ACU's Nakamine and Schreibner before bowing out in the Round of 16.
The Bears overall recorded a productive singles record of 19-7 and doubles record of 8-3 over the five days in College Station.
