BOULDER, Colo. – No. 18 Baylor volleyball started strong but couldn't sustain the momentum, falling 3-1 to No. 23 Colorado on Friday night at the CU Events Center.
The Bears (12-8, 7-5 Big 12) came out firing in the opening set, hitting .448 and cruising to a 25–14 win to snap a nine-set road losing streak. Baylor's offense was sharp early, with Ksenia Rakhmanchik and Bailey Warren combining for nine kills in the frame as the Bears controlled things from start to finish.
Colorado flipped the script in the second set, finding rhythm offensively behind a .407 hitting mark while limiting Baylor to .242. Despite six more kills from Rakhmanchik and three from Victoria Davis, the Buffaloes used a 6-1 mid-set run to pull away and even the match, 25-19.
The third set proved to be the turning point as Colorado continued its offensive surge, hitting .333 while holding Baylor to just .103. The Bears fought to stay close behind four more kills from Rakhmanchik, but CU cranked up the pressure from the service line and used some timely blocking to spur on a 10-2 run, which helped the Buffaloes take control of the match, 25-15.
In the fourth, Baylor stayed within striking distance early and tied the set at 12 before Colorado used a 5-2 spurt to give themselves some breathing room. Rakhmanchik stayed hot once again, tallying nine kills in the final frame to keep BU within striking distance, but CU closed on a 6-3 run to clinch the match, 25-20.
As a team, Baylor hit .231, marking the program's 10th match this season above .230. The Bears are now 8-2 in those contests and 11-2 when winning the opening set. Rakhmanchik led all players with a career-high 24 kills and 26 points, pacing Baylor's offense with a .320 hitting clip on 50 swings. Essix added eight kills on .467 hitting to go along with three blocks, while Davis chipped in five kills and two blocks. Setter Harley Kreck recorded 40 assists and eight digs, and libero Morgan Madison led the back row with 12 digs.
The Bears will have nearly a week off now, before returning home to face West Virginia on Friday night, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., from the Ferrell Center.
