Baylor has to keep all the potential outside distractions on the outside
Director of Sports Journalism Jerry Hill gives his three takeaways from Monday's weekly press conference with head coach Dave Aranda discussing Saturday's 41-17 road loss to Arizona and this week's regular-season finale between the Bears (5-6, 3-5) and Houston Cougars (7-3, 4-3). Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at McLane Stadium, with the game broadcast by TNT:
- KEEP IT ON THE OUTSIDE: With no classes this week, Aranda said the Bears have to be intentional about keeping out any potential outside distractions. "There could be a lot of phone time; there could be a lot of outside stuff that gets on the inside," he said. "There could be a lot of, 'I'm going to be doing this in a week,' or maybe, 'I'm going to be going here. I'm going to be doing all these other things.' So, all of that's got to be kept out. The focus has to be on what I need to do today. . . It's wanting to win and wanting to get something out of each day and go 1-0 each day. That's how you do it. You try to stack those wins."
- STOPPING THE RUN: Seems like a broken record, but Houston is another team with a dual-threat quarterback and an offense that makes a "concerted effort to run the football," Aranda said. Texas A&M transfer Connor Weigman has the "ability to scramble, make plays when stuff's not apparent, where guys aren't open. . . . As the season has progressed, there's been more and more designed quarterback runs where he's got a lot of yards and they've been able to run the ball and win some games with him as a leading rusher. They make a concerted effort, Houston does, to run the football. I think to stop the run is really the thing."
- SUPER SENIORS: Baylor will honor 20 seniors in a pregame presentation that includes the pass-catch combo of quarterback Sawyer Robertson and Josh Cameron. Robertson leads the Big 12 and ranks fourth nationally with 3,372 yards passing, while Cameron has a streak of 28-consecutive games with a catch and leads the Big 12 with 66 receptions (for 817 yards and eight touchdowns). Aranda said Robertson is "a guy that way cares, a guy that's totally committed, a guy that is a great leader and a great ambassador for Baylor and someone that really is focused on doing what's right for the school." A former walk-on who was a semifinalist for the Burlsworth Trophy, Cameron rises to the occasion, "whatever the circumstance is. He does it in such a way that just exudes class and integrity. And I think he's just so representative of everything that Baylor is about. We're going to miss him greatly."
