Bears pick up first series-sweep of the season
THE RUNDOWN
GAME ONE
The Bears started off hot in the Sunday matinee, recording four-straight one-out singles, including a two-RBI shot up the middle from Presleigh Pilon.
Baylor worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom half of the first to keep the Cougars off the board and maintain its 2-0 lead.
Continuing the hot hitting streak to the second inning, the Bears put up a five spot which was kick-started by back-to-back infield single from Ashlyn Wachtendorf and Brooklyn Carter. With two on, Turiya Coleman doubled down the right field line bringing home both baserunners before Abi Flores launched her second homer in as many days, a two-run shot to make it a 6-0 ballgame. After a fly-out to centerfield, Amber Toven launched her second long ball of the season to put the Bears ahead by seven runs.
Houston plated one run in the second and third innings before tacking on two more in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 7-4 game heading into the top of the fifth.
Wanting to try and put the game away in five, the Bears broke into the fifth with another five-spot to take the 12-4 lead, which was started by Toven reaching on an error and Karynton Dawson drawing a walk. With two on and one out, Wachtendorf singled to load the bases before Brooklyn Carter roped a ball to centerfield to plate Toven from third. Coleman drew a bases-loaded walk scoring Dawson before Shaylon Govan notched a two-RBI single to put the Bears on top 11-4. Pilon brought home the Bears' last run of the inning with a sacrifice fly which put the Bears ahead by eight runs.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Houston kept the game alive when they scored on a Baylor throwing error.
The Bears worked a scoreless sixth before adding two runs in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch and a bases loaded walk.
After taking the 14-4 lead in the top half of the inning Houston added a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh but that would be it as the Bears took game one of the doubleheader.
GAME TWO
Kicking game one off with a bang, Shaylon Govan launched her sixth homerun of the season over the wall in centerfield to take the 1-0 lead with two outs in the first inning.
The Cougars got two baserunners on in the bottom of the first, but Lillie Walker continued her hot pitching streak and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to keep Houston quiet.
After a scoreless frame from both sides in the second, Baylor capitalized again in the third inning to take the 2-0 lead. After a leadoff walk from Brooklyn Carter, she advanced to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base before Turiya Coleman walked to put runners on the corners. Govan recorded her second RBI of the game when she singled to right field bringing home Carter.
Baylor sat Houston down in order in the third and fourth innings, before the Cougars capitalized after a leadoff double and a Baylor throwing error in the fifth inning to make it a 2-1 game.
The Bears lined into a double play in the seventh inning to end their threat before allowing a Houston double in the bottom half of the inning. With one runner on, Baylor intentionally walked the next batter to set up the force but Walked ended the game with a strikeout looking to give Baylor the series sweep.
