WACO, Texas – Facing an Arizona State team that boasts the league's No. 1 offense, Baylor freshman lefty Carson Bailey got some help from his defense in wiggling out of some trouble early and recorded his fourth quality start of the season, allowing two runs in six innings.
But the Sun Devils (31-17, 15-8) got a combined four-hitter from Jack Martinez (6-2) and Jaden Alba in a combined four-hitter and scored two runs late in squaring the series with a 4-1 victory over the Bears (29-17, 10-13) Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
"I think you have to be really pleased with an outing when he goes out there and gives us six innings and only gives up two runs," Baylor coach Mitch Thompson said. "That's a really quality outing, and we were right there."
In a replay of the Bears' 7-4 win in the series opener, Baylor took the early lead in the third inning when Travis Sanders singled through the right side, stole second and scored on freshman Pearson Riebock's two-out single down the right-field line.
That lead disappeared in the next half inning, when Josiah Cromwick delivered a two-out, two-run single through the right side to put the Sun Devils up, 2-1.
The Bears did manage to get Martinez's pitch count up, the hard-throwing right-hander having to leave after throwing 109 pitches in five innings. He gave up one run on three hits and five walks with five strikeouts.
"We weren't able to get a whole lot of offense going today," Thompson said. "I think you have to give their guys credit for that. We competed and drew some walks, and Martinez didn't strike out like he typically strikes everybody out. He only had five, but we weren't able to hit many balls hard, get many good swings, put much pressure on them."
Alba was even more dominant, facing just one over the minimum in the last four innings, giving up just one hit and a walk to pick up his first save. Baylor's only hit over the last six innings was a leadoff single by Enzo Apodaca in the eighth inning, Alba bouncing back to retire the last six batters.
"I wanted to see some adjustments," Thompson said. "We weren't on top of balls, we didn't hit many balls hard. And I think that's part of their guy kind of lulling you to sleep. And all of a sudden, you get beat with a pitch here, you get beat with a pitch there. We just didn't take many good swings."
In the rubber match, Baylor will face Arizona State in the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday, with junior left-hander Ethan Calder (3-4, 5.80 ERA) the scheduled starter for the Bears.
"The guys will show up tomorrow and we'll be ready to go," Thompson said. "We'll hopefully come out and throw the ball well and get after them and be able to score more than they are. Those guys over there are a good team, they're very competitive. They battled really hard today, so give them credit."
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped game two of its weekend series against Arizona State, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
The Bears struggled offensively, mustering just one run on four hits against two Sun Devil pitchers who combined to strikeout 10 on the day. For BU on the bump, freshman lefty Carson Bailey logged his fourth quality start of the season, going six strong and allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while fanning six in the loss.
Freshman infielder Pearson Riebock drove in the lone run for Baylor, a sharp line drive into right field that put the Bears ahead 1-0 in the third inning. The knock marked Riebock's 18th game of this season in which he recorded both a hit and an RBI.
THE RUNDOWN
Bailey pitched to contact well early on in his start, collecting groundball outs at a high rate and rolling two double plays in the first three innings to keep the game scoreless.
BU got on the board in the bottom half of the third as redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders got into scoring position following a single and a stolen base, setting up Riebock's RBI shot down the right field line to give Baylor the early 1-0 advantage.
However, ASU answered right back in the top half of the fourth and took the lead as a double steal with two outs put a pair of baserunners in scoring position and a two-strike single to left chased both runs home.
From there, Bailey settled in nicely and picked up four more strikeouts across the final eight batters he faced to keep the Bears within striking distance.
ASU padded its lead off senior right-hander Caleb Bunch with single runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings, opening up a 4-1 lead late in the ballgame.
BU was unable to get to reliever Jaden Alba as he tossed the final four innings without allowing a run and surrendered just one hit and one walk to the Bears, evening up the series at one win apiece.
