WACO, Texas – Baylor track and field stars past and present shined this past weekend on some of the world's biggest stages.
All-American and school record-holder Demario Prince represented Jamaica in capturing a gold medal at the NACAC (North America, Central America and Caribbean) Championships in Freeport, The Bahamas.
After finishing second in his heat and fourth overall in the prelims with a 13.60 clocking, Prince came back Friday night to outduel American Dylan Beard by four-hundredths of a second in a time of 13.35 seconds that ranks as the fourth-fastest time in program history. The rising junior now owns three of the four-fastest times at Baylor and eight of the top 10.
Coming off an impressive freshman season that saw her qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Janae De Gannes placed third in the long jump at the Pan Am Junior Games in Asuncion, Paraguay.
The 18-year-old from Trinidad and Tobago went 6.33 meters (20 feet, 9 ¼ inches) on her first attempt, a mark that held for a bronze-medal finish behind Colombia's Natalia Linares (6.92 meters) and Cuba's Rosmaiby Quesada (6.32 meters).
De Gannes, a second-team All-American with her 12th-place finish at nationals, became the second woman in program history to break the 22-foot barrier when she went 22-0 ¾ at Texas A&M to finish second behind NCAA indoor champion and senior teammate Alexis Brown.
Turning pro at the end of her final collegiate campaign, Brown was part of a trio of former Baylor All-Americans that competed at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland. Brown placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 6.52 meters (21-4 ¾).
On the heels of winning his first NCAA title in June, Nathaniel Ezekiel continued his climb up the rankings in the 400-meter hurdles by finishing second in Poland with a time of 47.31 that broke his own Nigerian national record.
A three-time world champion and the gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Norway's Karsten Warholm won the event with a Diamond League record and world-leading time of 46.28.
Sitting just outside the top eight, despite only competing in two Diamond Legue meets, Ezekiel can qualify for the Aug. 27-28 Diamond League Finals in Zurich Switzerland with a strong showing at this week's meet in Brussels, Belgium.
Trayvon Bromell, who won the 100 meters at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor and 200 at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships in his two years at Baylor, finished fifth in the 100 at the Diamond League meet in Poland. With a time of 9.97, Bromell finished one-hundredth of a second behind the third- and fourth-place finishers.
Fifth in the updated Diamond League standings, Bromell is positioned to compete in the finals later this month.
