Bears welcome fans for Betty After Dark blackout match
WACO, Texas – Baylor soccer is home to open the gates of Betty Lou Mays Stadium for the first time in 2025 on Thursday, hosting the 17th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs at 7 p.m. for the first-ever Betty After Dark promotion. Fans are encouraged to wear black and will receive thunder sticks, while supplies last.
Thursday evening's match is the second in two years between the Bears and the Bulldogs, as the programs opened the 2024 season with each other in Starkville. State got the upper hand with an early goal in the third minute, as the first shot of the season found the back of the net from Ilana Izquierdo's boot.
The all-time series is tied 1-1 with BU taking the first faceoff, a 2-1 result in Waco for game No. 2 of the 2002 campaign.
Mississippi State is fresh off a top 10 win, jumping from receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll to No. 17, after downing No. 10 Wake Forest, 2-1, in Starkville on Sunday. Kara Harris and Ally Perry each recorded their first goals of the season to grab the victory.
Baylor went 1-0-1 in their weekend tournament in Montana after landing in a 0-0 draw against Denver and picking up win No. 1 of the season against Montana, delivering the Grizzlies their first loss at home in 18 tries, a streak that dated back to 2023. Azul Alvarez was named Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week for her efforts in both shutouts as the only keeper in the conference to allow zero goals in 180 minutes of game time last week.
Entry to Betty Lou Mays Field is free for all matches in the 30th season of Baylor Soccer. Fans are encouraged to arrive early in their best black attire on Thursday for the first official school-sanctioned blackout promotion.
The match will be on ESPN+ with Lincoln Rose and Katie Goodman on the call live from Central Texas, with live stats also available for free online.
