Alvarez posts back-to-back shutouts for a share of weekly conference honor
IRVING, Texas – Baylor soccer senior goalkeeper Azul Alvarez has been named Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time in her career, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
After recording a pair of shutouts in Montana, Alvarez tallied six total saves across the Denver and Montana matches, finishing as the only Big 12 goalkeeper to play 180 minutes without allowing a goal this week.
The award is Baylor's 64th total weekly soccer nod from the Big 12 and the sixth goalkeeper-specific since the criteria was added before the 2020-21 season.
Alvarez shares the goalkeeper honor with Paiton Collins (BYU). Hope Leyba (Colorado) and Seven Castain (TCU) were recognized as Offensive Players of the Week, Avery Frischknecht (BYU) earned Defensive Player of the Week and Gabi Berchon (UCF) claimed Freshman of the Week.
Baylor opens its home slate on Thursday at 7 p.m. against 17th-ranked Mississippi State at Betty Lou Mays Field. The match has been dubbed Betty After Dark, where fans are encouraged to wear black and will receive free thunder sticks, while supplies last.
