
MG Set for Fighting Illini Invitational

WACO, Texas -- After opening the season with the prestigious Folds of Honor Collegiate in Michigan last weekend, Baylor men's golf will hit the road to face a stout field in the Fighting Illini Invitational, hosted by Illinois at Olympia Fields Country Club on Friday-Saturday-Sunday.
The Bears will face a field that includes Alabama, Arizona State, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Indiana, Loyola Marymount, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. A total of 10 of the 15 teams participating are ranked inside the Golfweek Preseason Coaches' Poll top-20.
A year ago, Georgia Tech claimed the title at the Fighting Illini Invite with a 12-under score of 828, besting Arizona State by a stroke.
Baylor last won this event in 2019 with a six-over 846, the same year that Cooper Dossey claimed the individual title with a four-under 206. The event has been contested 18 previous times at the historic Olympia Fields CC, a course that has played host to the USA Amateur, a pair of US Opens, two PGA Championships, a US Senior Open, five Western Opens and the BMW Championship twice.
Round one on Friday will begin at 7 a.m. at Olympia Fields, resumes at 7 a.m. on Saturday and concludes at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Olympia Fields CC North Course is a par 70 with a total yardage of 7,353.
At the Folds of Honor Collegiate last week in Grand Haven, Mich., the Bears finished 11th with a 883 total score over three rounds. Alex Heard led the way with a +2 showing, good for a top-25 finish that also featured a round 3 67.
Jonas Appel finished 40th with a +10 tournament, including a first-round 69. Sam Dossey placed 63rd with a +16, featuring a pair of 72s. Martin Kemp also finished in 63rd with a 230 total score.
