LUBBOCK, Texas – Highlighted by a 3-4 finish in the women's pole vault, Baylor track and field recorded six top-10 finishes Friday on the first day of Texas Tech's Corky Classic at the Sports Performance Center.
Alencia Lentz cleared the bar at 13-9 ¾ on her final attempt to take third, with Tenly Kuhn placing fourth at 13-3 ¾. Texas A&M freshman Lily Carlson won with a clearance of 14-5 ½.
On the men's side, the Bears' best results came in the 300 meters. Sophomore Arizona State transfer Malik Franklin won his heat and finished seventh overall based on time, with sophomore Tyler Honeyman 10th (33.54) and Aren Spencer 13th (34.01).
Sophomore Aaronya Kinchen narrowly missed a top-eight finish in the women's 300 meters, finishing second in her heat and ninth overall at 39.17. She finished just three-hundredths of a second behind Arizona State's Niaya Morgan and right at two seconds behind winner Mekenze Kelley from Texas Tech.
Multi-event sophomore athlete Logan Todorovich placed 10th in the women's long jump with a mark of 18-11 ¼, less than three inches out of a spot in the finals. Freshman Madilyn Todorovich, her younger sister, placed 21st at 17-8 ¼.
The Baylor women had a total of five runners advance to the semifinals in the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, with sophomore Hannah Lowe placing 13th in the 60 meters with a time of 7.43 after posting the fastest non-automatic qualifying time in the opening round of 7.41.
Freshman Jada Edwards and sophomore Hannah Lowe also reached the 60-meter semifinals, placing 14th and 16th, respectively. Sophomores Kaylah Braxton and Logan Todorovich made it through the opening round in the 60 hurdles, but Braxton was 18th and Todorovich didn't finish her semifinal race.
Making his Baylor debut, Arkansas transfer Sebastian Berntsen was clocked at 7.06 seconds in the 60 meters and placed 14th in the long jump with a mark of 23-10 ¼. Freshman Kingston Williams reached the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.18 and finished 24th in the long jump at 22-3 ¾.
While Berntsen, Ricquan Graham and Arizona transfer Brian Limage failed to advance in the 60 meters, sophomore Austen Diggs won his heat in 6.87 and then lowered his time to 6.82 in the semifinals.
Day 2 of the Corky Classic starts with the field events at 11 a.m., followed by the events on the track at 11:30 a.m. Two-time Big 12 champion and 2024 All-American Tiriah Kelley is scheduled to make her season debut in the 200 meters and 4x400-meter relay.
