Bears play through regional field for a trip to the ITA Indoor Team Championship
AUSTIN, Texas – The 25th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team heads to Austin to face No. 15 California on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT to open ITA Kickoff Weekend. Due to weather, the match has been moved to the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
Saturday's match against Cal will be followed by a matchup with either 17th-ranked Texas or unranked Arizona on Sunday, with first serve to be determined and announced following Saturday's matches. The winner of the four-team regional will advance to the ITA Indoor Team Championships, which will be held Feb. 6-10 at Northwestern's Combe Tennis Center and Illinois' Atkins Tennis Center.
For the Bears, Na Dong and Zuzanna Kubacha are ranked No. 61 in doubles after opening the dual-match season with a 6-2 win over Illinois' 60th-ranked duo of Tess Bucher and Alice Xu. Dong paired with Kennedy Gibbs is ranked No. 38. The 1-0 pairing also appears in the ITA singles rankings, with Dong at No. 40 and Kubacha at No. 57. Freshman Mu-Jie Tzeng is ranked No. 99 in her first season in Waco.
Cal opens its dual-match season against Baylor and holds a No. 15 team ranking. The Golden Bears feature doubles teams of Mao Mushika and Greta Greco Lucchina at No. 77 and Mushika paired with Laure Cilekova at No. 80. Cal also has four ranked singles players: No. 9 Berta Passola Folch, No. 63 Naomi Xu, No. 73 Mushika and No. 92 Greco Lucchina.
Baylor faced Texas last season in the Kickoff Weekend championship match in Austin, falling in a hard-fought 4-3 decision. The match came down to the final singles court, where Texas' Eszter Meri edged Baylor's Liubov Kostenko in a tiebreaker.
Texas opens the season 0-1 after a 5-2 loss to No. 13 Pepperdine last weekend. No Longhorn doubles teams appear in the ITA rankings following fall play, but Texas features the No. 2 singles player in the nation in Carmen Andreea Herea.
BU is on a roll playing against Arizona since the Wildcats joined the Big 12 Conference, beating them last spring, 4-0 and 4-3, on two different occasions, once on the road and another at the Hurd Tennis Center during the Big 12 Championship.
Arizona enters the weekend with a 3-1 record after wins over UC Davis, UC San Diego and Northern Arizona, with its lone loss coming against No. 19 USC. Haylee Conway and Zoya Chulak are ranked No. 72 in doubles, and no Wildcats singles players appear in the top 125.
