DELOSS DODDS FULL RESULTS
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Baylor men took center stage on Day 2 of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Saturday, with Demario Prince breaking his own meet and facility records in the 60-meter hurdles, Amon Malakwen winning the 600-yard run and the 4x400 relay posting their first win of the season.
Prince, running the 60-meter hurdles for the first time since last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, had easily the fastest qualifying time in the prelims (7.72) and then blew the field away with a 7.59 time in the final. That ranks as the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this season and is tied for third-best in school history.
"I think Coach Ben (Dalton) has done a great job with him, just getting him prepared," Baylor head coach Michael Ford said. "He had such a long outdoor season last year, so that's why we kind of started him a little later. But he's been looking really good in practice. So, I wasn't really surprised about the time. He executed the race right and, man, he looked good, very good."
Malakwen, who ran an indoor PR in the 800 meters the night before, narrowly edged Iowa State's Jacoby Harmon by four-hundredths of a second to win the 600-yard run in 1:10.50.
Capping off the day and the meet the right way, the men's 4x400 relay of Malik Franklin, Abbas Ali, Austen Diggs and Tyler Honeyman brought home the title in 3:08.25, beating runner-up Kansas by more than two seconds.
"Initially, we weren't going to run a relay," Ford said. "But when Aren (Spencer) went down at A&M, I was like, we've got to get a relay time in this week. Tyler and Abbas just ran the 200 and came back for the relay, so they'll open up in the 400 next week to get some more marks."
A disappointing ninth in the 200 meters on Friday night in his season debut, fifth-year senior Laurenz Colbert came back to finish second overall and first among collegiate athletes in the 60-meter finals with a 6.75 time. The Bears claimed four of the top six spots in the event, with Diggs third (6.81), Bailey Hashmi fourth (6.82) and Ricquan Grahm sixth (6.89).
The women did them one better, taking five of the top seven spots in the 60-meter finals. Tiriah Kelley finished second in a season-best time of 7.31, just two hundredths of a second off her PR, followed by Royaltee Brown (7.45), Hannah Lowe (7.48), freshman Success Oyibu (7.59) and freshman Jada Edwards (7.59).
Other highlights on the women's side included a third-place finish in the 400 meters Invite by Serafima Lucero in a PR time of 53.88; a runner-up finish by Ruth Kimeli in the 1,000 meters with a four-second PR time of 2:45.02; and Kaylah Braxton finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a PR time of 8.57.
Freshman Kingston Williams record PRs in all but two of the seven events in the heptathlon, finishing ninth overall with 5,229 points, the second-most in program history. On Saturday, he ran the 60 hurdles in 8.15 seconds and the 1,000 meters in 2:38.32 – finishing second in each event – but only cleared 10-10 in the pole vault.
"I know he really wanted the school record," Ford said of the school-record point total of 5,334 set by Henry Vildosola 12 years ago. "The pole vault has to get better for him to get it. But if he can get more points in the other events, the pole vault won't be as critical. But for the first time, I thought he had a great meet."
Baylor will go back on the road next week for the Carolina Classic, which begins Friday in Columbia, S.C.
