Youens and Janusek crush first-career homers as Bears clinch series over the Aggies
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball defeated New Mexico State, 5-2, Saturday night at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco behind a five-run first inning that fueled the series-clinching victory.
Redshirt sophomore designated hitter John Youens and freshman outfielder Brady Janusek hit back-to-back blasts in the first inning to propel the BU offense. The homers were each the firsts of their careers.
On the mound, senior southpaw Ethan Calder turned in 3.2 scoreless innings and fanned five before turning it over to fifth-year senior right-hander Caleb Bunch who picked up the win in 3.1 scoreless frames of relief. Bunch struck out three and allowed just one hit and zero walks in his first outing of 2026.
Though the Bears recorded just three hits on the night, they benefited from eight walks and two hit batters by NMSU's pitching staff, marking the second-straight game with double-digit free passes.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears wasted no time getting the offense going, as three-consecutive walks loaded the bases for none other than redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong. Though the new NCAA record holder for grand slams in a single game did not leave the yard, Armstrong did deliver a sacrifice fly at over 110 miles per hour off the bat to score the game's first run.
Next to the plate was Youens, who mashed a 1-0 offering over the center-field wall just left of the batter's eye for a three-run homer, the first of his career. Janusek followed suit on the very next pitch for a solo shot and his first collegiate hit, quickly pushing the BU lead to 5-0 after the opening frame.
Calder took it from there, as he put up nothing but zeros for 3.2 innings and fanned five, including a stretch of four punchouts in a five-batter span before turning it over to Bunch. Bunch was just as effective, tossing the next 3.1 frames without allowing an NMSU run on just one hit and no walks while punching out three.
With two on and two outs in the top of the fourth, Bunch struck out the first batter he faced to squander an Aggies run-scoring opportunity and brought the Bears back up to hit with still their five-run advantage.
Baylor got a runner in scoring position as redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders swiped his second bag of the season after reaching on a throwing error as one of his four times on base on the night. However, the Bears couldn't cash him in and held a 5-0 lead through to the fifth.
Things stayed quiet until the eighth when the Aggies got on the board in the top of the inning, plating two runs on three hits and threatened again in the ninth by sending the tying run to the plate, but senior right-hander Grayson Murry was able to buckle down and finish off the series-clinching victory.

Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the Bears' pitching performance…
"Early in the year, we've got to keep guys on pace for where they're at. We have to keep them healthy … Caleb Bunch came in and threw the ball very well for 3.1 and Grayson Murry battled. We won and that's all we're trying to get done."
On Brady Janusek's home run and power potential…
"He does have power. He's got the ability to hit the ball out in all areas of the park. I think we've just got to get his feet wet and really get him comfortable and keep letting him swing it. There's good things that can happen from that, he hits balls really hard. He hits balls as hard as anybody we've got on this club."
