Bears score 11 unanswered runs on 17 hits and 12 walks in offensive onslaught
BU (4-0) scored 11 unanswered runs after Texas State (3-1) took a one-run lead in the third inning. The Bears opened the scoring with three quick runs in the first two frames, then shut the door the rest of the way as five Baylor pitchers combined to hold the Bobcats scoreless over the final 6.2 innings.
Three Bears had three hits apiece in sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock, redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong and freshman outfielder Bo Caraway. Caraway, along with redshirt sophomore designated hitter John Youens and senior outfielder Caleb Bergman, each drove in two runs to lead the charge at the plate.
Junior right-hander Charlie Atkinson made his Baylor debut and earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings on the mound with a pair of punchouts and only allowed one hit. BU walked just two batters and struck out 11 on the night.
THE RUNDOWN
For the third-straight game, Baylor wasted no time and put up runs in the bottom of the first as Youens delivered a two-run double before the Bobcats could record an out. Then in the second, the Bears added on as Armstrong singled in redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders to make it 3-0.
Sophomore right-hander Zack Wallace made his first-career start on the mound and handed the ball off after two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. That's when Texas State struck for a four-spot in the top of the third on the backs of three consecutive extra-base hits, an RBI triple, a two-run home run and a solo home run, to charge in front at 4-3.
That would be all for the visitors though, as junior lefty Mason Green came on to stop the bleeding and kept the Bears in it until the fifth frame. Freshman outfielder Brady Janusek delivered the game-tying blow with an RBI triple off the top of the right-center wall, then Caraway came through with a clutch, two-out, two-run single as BU retook a 6-4 lead.
The Bears didn't stop there, as things snowballed on Texas State in the bottom of the sixth and the green and gold put up five runs on four hits, three walks and five wild pitches in the inning. Bergman put the cherry on top with an RBI double to deep center field and later scored to make it an 11-4 advantage.
In the seventh, Riebock tripled in a run and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Bergman, extending BU's lead to 13-4. And in the eighth, redshirt freshman outfielder Hunter Snow added a pinch-hit RBI double for good measure to swell the lead to 10.
Atkinson picked up the win with two punchouts in two scoreless innings and gave way to junior right-hander Luke DeVasher, who worked his second scoreless appearance of the young season. Freshman righty Luke McLeod was sharp in his collegiate debut, tossing a scoreless eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts before turning it over to senior right-hander Grayson Murry, who shut things down in the ninth with a 1-2-3 frame and two punchouts of his own.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On his team's response in the win…
"Texas State is a good club. Their lineup is going to score runs and every arm out of their bullpen was a 90-92 mile an hour guy. I was really proud of our response tonight. We came out early, then got punched back and they bloodied our noses pretty good. But our guys showed right back up and then we threw up six-straight zeros on the mound. I think we learned a lot about our club and I liked our fight. I liked when the guys were given an opportunity, they took it and ran. I'm excited, I'm looking forward to this weekend, the competition level is going to keep going up. We'll get punched and that's fine, but from what I saw tonight, we'll punch back and that will be fun to watch."
Freshman OF Bo Caraway
On making his first collegiate start…
"It was fun for sure, especially going out there and going 3-for-5. But, that score was the whole team. I didn't just do one job, not one person did just one job. We all had great reads on the basepaths, great knocks. It was awesome for sure."
Redshirt Sophomore DH John Youens
On the offense scoring early…
"Everyone in front of me was getting on base, so I just came up to the plate with confidence and I was able to get a good swing off. The guys in front of me are probably getting on base 75% of the time. It helps me out a lot and makes baseball easier."
