WACO, Texas – Psst, come a little closer, let me tell you a secret.
Truth is, Baylor basketball doesn't necessarily have any secret sauce.
"When you don't guard and you let their best three players – who we know they're the three best players in the scouting report – score 65 points, something is wrong," Colorado coach Tad Boyle said. "But credit Baylor, those three kids are really talented players, very, very good, and they were certainly better than us tonight, that's for sure."
Tounde Youssoufou, Cameron Carr and Obi Agbim knocked down seven first-half 3-pointers to help the Bears blow out to a 24-point lead on the way to an 86-67 win over the visiting Buffaloes Wednesday night before a crowd of 7,012 at the Foster Pavilion.
"It definitely makes coaches look better," said Baylor coach Scott Drew, whose team improved to 13-9 overall and 3-7 in the Big 12. "But I think at the end of the day, if you've got three that are going, it's really hard to stop a team. It's easy to lock in on one or two. But you get three guys, especially those three, because they can put up big numbers."
The Buffaloes (13-10, 3-7) had a particularly difficult time stopping the 6-5 Yessoufou, who scored at all three levels to finish with 27 points, one off his career high. He knocked down 4-of-7 from distance and 3-of-4 from the line and hit some sweet jumpers off post-ups.
"He took shots that we practice. He took them in spots we practice," Drew said of Yessoufou, who added seven rebounds, one block, a steal and an assist. "I thought he let the game come to him. Defensively, he's continued to get better and better, knowing what we want, when we want it, how we want it."
Yessoufou said he tries not to force it, "just play the game."
"Whenever it comes to me, I just go and play the right way and try to help my team out as much as I can," he said.
Boyle said the freshman guard was "a man against boys tonight."
"We knew they liked to play through him in the post," Boyle said. "He's big, he's strong, he's athletic, and he can get his own shot. We did a pretty good job when he was in the post, I thought, but when he was facing up and taking us one-on-one, we just had nobody that could stop him. But it's not just him. Obi and Carr are really good players, too. They've got a big three at the 1, 2 and 3. And they did it without (Dan) Skillings, which is an important piece, too."
After a slow start in conference play, Agbim has strung together four-consecutive double-digit scoring games, combining for 64 points and hitting 14-of-37 (37.8%) from 3-point range. Against the Buffaloes, the 6-3 senior guard scored a season-high 19 points, added six assists and had his third block of the season when he chased down Colorado guard Isaiah Johnson and blocked a would-be layup at the rim.
"Every now and then, I could probably get one or two (blocks)," Agbim said. "But shout out to them for setting the table for me. Tonight, I just happened to get one, and I'm happy for that."
Putting together one of his best all-around games, Carr had 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and zero turnovers in 35 minutes.
"Cam, with six assists and zero turnovers, that's a tremendous outing for him," Drew said.
Coming off a 63-53 road win over West Virginia that snapped a four-game losing streak, the Bears have strung together back-to-back wins for the first time since beating Southern and Arlington Baptist back in December.
Asked about Saturday's trip to play seventh-ranked Iowa State, which handed Baylor a 70-60 loss in Waco, Yessoufou said the Bears are just taking it one game at a time.
"Whatever Coach has for us, as a plan, we're just going to stick to it and be locked-in," he said. "But at the end of the day, right now, we've got nothing to lose. We're just going to go out there and fight. That's the mindset now."
Baylor will play Iowa State (20-2, 7-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, in a game that will be televised by ESPN.
