SB Caps a Dramatic Day at the Getterman Classic with a Pair of Walkoffs
2/6/2026 11:29:00 PM | Softball
Friday marked the first time since 2020 that Baylor had two walk-off hits on the same day
WACO, Texas – Baylor softball delivered a pair of walk-off victories Friday at Getterman Stadium, defeating New Mexico, 8-7, before rallying late to top Wichita State, 3–2, in dramatic fashion.
The Bears made it happen in a variety of ways, bouncing back from late-inning disappointment against UNM, while never leading in the win over Wichita State. Baylor capitalized on clutch and patient hitting to go along with solid pitching to move to 2-1 on the young season.
Rundown
Game One
Baylor opened the day with an 8–7 walk-off win over New Mexico after scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Bears collected 14 hits in the contest, highlighted by a two-run homer by Averie Waddell and the walk-off two-out shot in the seventh to seal the comeback victory.
Karynton Dawson went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, while Leah Cran added three hits. Baylor scored multiple runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to keep the Lobos at arms-length, until they struck for four in the seventh to tie the game.
In the circle, Sadie Ross earned the win after re-entering the game to close it out, going five innings total, allowing just one run while striking out three to stabilize the game after an early deficit.
Game Two
Baylor capped the night with another walk-off, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Wichita State, 3-2.
Down 2-0 entering the final frame, the Bears mounted a comeback fueled by timely and patient hitting. On a night where freshman Gianna Gusman had some stars next to a few plays, Olivia Buettner led off the seventh with a double.
Buettner's double led to Baylor's first run of the game on Averie Waddell's fourth RBI of the day to make it 2-1. After Brooklyn Carter singled, Amber Toven and Faith Piper showed their patience, drawing pivotal walks to set the table for Karynton Dawson.
The sophomore sent a 2-2 pitch back to the pitcher, Gabby Fakes, whose throw went wide of first, scoring Carter and sending Bears fans home happy.
Lexie Warncke earned the win in relief, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings while striking out four and allowing just two hits to keep Baylor within reach. Peyton Tanner started the game and worked 2.2 innings.
Highlights
Head Coach Glenn Moore — "You've got to give this team credit, they never threw in the towel. We were inefficient in a lot of areas and put ourselves in positions where, quite honestly, we could've lost the game. To stay with it says a lot about this group believing they can do great things. They've got me a little baffled at times, to be honest, but I love their spirit and their fight. There's a lot of talent on this team, and we've just got to be patient and let the cream rise."
"I think our leaders like Amber, and even Brooklyn, who looked really good hitting lower in the order, are setting the tone. They're leading this team, and our young players with talent are following. In some really crucial at-bats, those kids have looked extremely mature and experienced, even though they aren't very experienced yet. That's going to pay dividends down the road. You saw it in the quality at-bats. Olivia continuing to fight off pitches and staying disciplined without getting overaggressive, and Faith, a sophomore who didn't get a ton of playing time last year, showing patience and drawing a walk in a big moment.cMost players get anxious there and try to do too much, but that walk was huge. Seeing things like that is motivating and really encouraging."
