Early deficit too much for Bears' late rally to overcome
Despite a late offensive surge that saw the Bears (6-5) surpass double digits in hits, the early Roadrunners advantage proved to be too much to overcome. UTSA (10-1) jumped out to a 9-0 lead through five innings and held off Baylor's comeback bid that featured BU runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth frames.
Redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders led the Bears with three hits and two RBIs, moving his batting average to .463 on the year, while sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock added a pair of knocks and runs batted in himself. Redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements collected two doubles and scored twice on his 20th birthday, and freshman designated hitter Cash McDade hit his first-career home run, a solo shot that got BU on the board in the sixth.
On the mound, senior right-hander Cade Hansen was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits in just 3.1 innings of work. Redshirt freshman righty Brayden Bergman and junior lefty RJ Ruais each struck out the side in their scoreless outings, while freshman right-hander Caldwell McFaddin made his collegiate debut with a scoreless frame.
THE RUNDOWN
After Baylor left Sanders stranded on third to end the first inning, UTSA jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. The Roadrunners scratched across the game's first run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, then on the next pitch hit a three-run blast to give themselves the early advantage.
Back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs extended the UTSA lead to 6-0 in the top of the third, then BU left another pair of baserunners stranded in the home half. Junior right-hander Luke DeVasher replaced Hansen with one down in the top of the fourth, but an RBI double and sacrifice fly pushed the advantage to 8-0.
Another sac fly in the top of the fifth made it 9-0 before Bergman came on to strike out the side in the top of the sixth after hitting a batter and allowing a single. McDade got the Bears on the board in the home half by crushing a breaking pitch into the Crawford boxes at Daikin Park, his first-career home run.
In the bottom of the seventh, five Baylor hits accounted for three runs as BU chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to 9-4. Sanders singled in a run and later scored on Riebock's RBI single. Then, freshman outfielder Brady Janusek notched his only knock of the night to score Riebock and extend his on-base streak to 11 games on the year.
UTSA countered with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth to pad its lead at 11-4. But, the Bears wouldn't lay down that easy as another trio of hits in the home half, highlighted by more RBI singles by Sanders and Riebock, moved the scoreline to 11-6.
McFaddin came on to make his collegiate debut in the ninth and stranded a pair of Roadrunners on base, but Baylor went down in order in the bottom of the ninth as UTSA completed its undefeated weekend at the BRUCE BOLT College Classic.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On falling behind early…
"They were beating us in every facet of the game early for sure. We had a couple guys go out there and pitch some good innings, gave us an opportunity to get back in it a little bit. Our offense got going once we got their left-hander out of the game. There were some good things that happened, I was glad to see [Cash] McDade square up a ball and get it out of the ballpark. We just gave up too many two-out runs, especially early in the game. We were one pitch away from getting out of it, but we're not able to get out of it and that's frustrating. We've got to get tougher, make a better pitch, make a play, something to get out of innings earlier."
Redshirt Freshman INF Brytton Clements
On what the team can learn from a weekend tournament like this…
"I think when we go down, we've got to strike back. We can't go down and shut down. We've got to stay up and be positive. I think we're all just trying to pump each other up and not get too down."
