Fifth-year senior closer fans career-high six in three scoreless to slam the door
BU (12-9, 2-2) used a three-run seventh inning to charge ahead of the Cowboys (14-8, 0-4), then brought Bunch in to see things out as the closer threw the final three innings and matched his career high with six strikeouts.
Elsewhere, freshman outfielder Brady Janusek hit his fifth home run of the season and redshirt junior right-hander Lucas Davenport gave the Bears four solid innings in his longest start since returning from injury. Fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson added two hits and a clutch RBI single in the fourth inning to contribute to the victory.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor struck first thanks to Janusek's solo shot in the top of the first and threatened for more in the second by loading the bases with two outs, but an inning-ending strikeout squelched the opportunity to add on.
Davenport worked out of danger in the bottom of the second, but was tagged on a two-run home run in the third as OSU took a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Johnson came through with two strikes and two outs to knot the score at 2-2 with an RBI single. The Pokes had the go-ahead run reach third base in the home half, but back-to-back punchouts ended the inning and effectively put a cap on Davenport's outing, with four frames of two-run ball while he fanned five.
After the Bears were retired in order in the top of the fifth, the Cowboys went back in front after a two-out, two-run double made it 4-2. BU got one back in the sixth, however, as sophomore utility man Pearson Riebock drove in freshman pinch runner Bo Caraway with a sacrifice fly to cut it to 4-3.
The Bears made use of some OSU miscues in the top of the seventh, as a throwing error, hit by pitch and consecutive walks brought home the tying run. A run-scoring double play ball gave BU a 5-4 lead, then redshirt freshman outfielder Hunter Snow stepped up clutch with a pinch-hit RBI double to add some insurance at 6-4.
Bunch entered with two baserunners on and nobody out in the bottom of the seventh and punched out a pair with the bases loaded to end the inning and preserve Baylor's two-run lead. In the eighth, it was much of the same as the first two Cowboys reached, but another two strikeouts ended the inning and left the game-tying runs on base.
Bunch came back out for the ninth and fanned the first two he faced before a two-out single and walk brought the game-winning run to the plate. However, on his 63rd pitch of the game, Bunch induced a 4-3 groundout to seal the series-opening win for the Bears.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight's win…
"The guys just kept competing. I'm proud of them, I'm proud of our at-bats, I'm proud of the way we fought. Caleb Bunch was fantastic to finish it. It's a great team win. It's a really nice job by our guys and I'm proud of them. It started with Brady Janusek's big home run to start the game. [Lucas] Davenport was great. We had a couple little defensive miscues, but our guys picked us up. Ty Johnson with a big diving play in center field. We pinch-run Bo Caraway, he steals second and runs the bases like a pro. That's a big deal. Little things added up, so I'm excited for these guys. And I just can't say enough about Caleb Bunch, that guy's a warrior and we're lucky to have him."
Fifth-Year Senior RHP Caleb Bunch
On his mentality coming in to the game in the seventh…
"I love being in that spot. I love coming in at the end of the game, especially with a lead. Those guys behind me make it so easy. They work their butts off and that's what keeps me going. Just had to keep them in play and let my guys work. That provides me with a lot of trust. It makes me able to execute my pitches. Without them behind me, I don't know where I'd be."
Fifth-Year Senior OF Ty Johnson
On doing the little things that added to the win…
"Definitely not one of my best 'swing' days but one of my best results days. That just goes to show that putting the ball in play and making things happen can really help out your team. Then that play in center, I feel like I've made that play a thousand times, so love that I made it for RJ and in a big spot, but always love doing that stuff."
