Bears and Cowboys to play rubber match on Sunday to decide series
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State hit three home runs and scored all five of its runs on extra-base hits as the Cowboys downed Baylor baseball, 5-3, on Saturday night at O'Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., to even the weekend series.
Sophomore right-hander Zack Wallace gave the Bears (12-10, 2-3) a season-long 4.2 innings of work in his first conference start, while redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders, sophomore utility man Pearson Riebock and fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson each added two hits on the night.
OSU (15-8, 1-4) hit a pair of solo shots, a two-run homer and a late RBI double to slug past BU and tie up the three-game set for its first Big 12 win of the year.
THE RUNDOWN
The Cowboys opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a leadoff blast, but Wallace did well to minimize damage as he stranded one and fanned four in the early goings, though Baylor trailed 1-0 heading into the third.
That's when a two-run shot extended the Pokes' lead to 3-0, as BU was unable to take advantage of a runner in scoring position in the top half.
After Wallace retired the side in order in the fourth, the Bears got on the board in the top of the fifth as three-straight singles ignited a two-run frame. Johnson drove in a run, then an RBI infield single for freshman outfielder Brady Janusek brought BU within one at 3-2.
However, another leadoff solo home run in the home half doubled OSU's lead back to 4-2 and put an end to Wallace's night. Freshman right-hander Luke McLeod came on with two away and junior catcher JJ Kennett nabbed a would-be base stealer to send it to the sixth.
With two outs, Riebock singled and moved up to third on a few Oklahoma State miscues. Then, Kennett walked and Baylor brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but a groundout ended the threat and left two Bears aboard in scoring position.
McLeod worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth, but ran into some trouble in the seventh as the Cowboys' leadoff man tripled and scored on a double two batters later. From there, redshirt freshman righty Brayden Bergman entered and struck out a pair to leave things at 5-2 going into the eighth.
Again with two outs, BU got some traffic on the basepaths after a pair of free passes, but an inning-ending groundout squandered the threat. Then, Bergman retired the OSU side in order in the home half to keep it within striking distance.
In the ninth, Johnson led off with a double and scored on an error by the OSU center fielder on a ball that redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong crushed to the warning track. That brought the tying run to the plate, but Oklahoma State came up with a strikeout to end the ballgame and even the series.

On tonight's ballgame…
"It was a really competitive college baseball game between two teams who really wanted to win. Felt like our pitching gave us a shot, but we gave up three long balls and in the end that hurt us. We cost ourselves a run or so defensively and in a 5-3 game, that's something that can hurt you. The guys had a lot of fight. I thought our pitchers competed their tails off and our hitters competed their tails off at the plate. We'll keep after it. We're disappointed we didn't win, but it's not from a lack of effort I can promise you that."
