BU freshman Ella Brown collects her career-first hit to seal the win
WACO, Texas – Baylor softball snapped a brief two-game skid in emphatic fashion Tuesday night, defeating UT Arlington, 8-0, in six innings at Getterman Stadium.
On a night where 20 players saw action, freshman walk-on Ella Brown delivered the finishing blow with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to send home fellow walk-on Kaislynn Tovar and secure the run-rule victory.
The win also snapped a mini two-game skid against UTA, as BU won its first game against the Mavericks since 2023.
RUNDOWN
After two scoreless innings to open the game, Baylor broke through in the third when Sa'Mya Jones led off with a single, later scoring on a Karynton Dawson bunt. Faith Piper followed that up with an RBI single of her own, before Averie Waddell capped the inning with an RBI single to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.
Jones created more chaos at the top of the lineup in the fourth with a single, eventually scoring on a throwing error off the bat of Brooklyn Carter. Toven added an RBI single, for her team-leading 26th RBI. Dawson followed with a sacrifice fly, and Kaygen Marshall laced an RBI double to extend the lead to 7-0.
Using three of its four primary pitchers, Peyton Tanner, Lexi Warncke and Sadie Ross kept the Mavericks off the board through six innings.
After a leadoff walk and a wild pitch moved pinch-runner Kaislynn Tovar into scoring position, Brown stepped in as a pinch hitter and ripped a double to right center, plating Tovar for the run-rule clincher and the 8-0 victory.

Head Coach Glenn Moore on the response of his team: "The challenge was bigger than people might think. You go from seeing 70-71 mph pitching all weekend against Texas, to facing 58-61, and that's tough to prepare for. We slowed the machines down a bit in practice, but hitting is all about timing, and you could see we were out in front early in the first couple of innings. I thought we did a really good job making that adjustment as the game went on, and keeping them at zero was big. Our pitching staff did an outstanding job. Overall, we did what we needed to do, got back on track, and it felt pretty good."
Moore on Ella Brown's Game-sealing hit: "I told Coach Diaz when we were coming off the field, "That's why I coach." I wanted to give some kids an opportunity, players who hadn't been in a game all year. Ella Brown is a walk-on who's here to help this program in any way she can, and we also had another player at third base [Tovar] in a similar situation. To see those two help finish the game is what this program is all about. That's why you saw the dogpile. We've got a great culture in that dugout. This team fights for each other, they love each other, and they celebrate each other's success. That moment was a big deal for everyone, not just the two players on the field."
Ella Brown on her career-first hit in her career-first at-bat: "I was quite nervous. I hadn't had any at bats this season, but I was just so blessed to have my teammates encouraging me that this is all I have been working for, and it was a great opportunity. I just took them with me during that at bat and just let it rip."
