Baylor staying in state for just the third time this season
CARROLLTON, Texas – Facing its stiffest competition of the spring semester, the Baylor men's golf team will play in the Maridoe Collegiate that begins Monday at Maridoe Golf Club.
Four of the 13 teams in the two-day, 54-hole tournament are ranked in the top 20, led by a pair of Big 12 teams in seventh-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 9 Arizona State.
The field also includes 15th-ranked Oklahoma, No. 16 Alabama and the host North Texas team, along with Mississippi State, UNCG, Louisiana, UT-Rio Grande Valley, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston and Boston College.
Led by a top-20 finish by Jonas Appel, the Bears finished sixth at the Maridoe last year in a tournament that Oklahoma won by 17 strokes over in-state rival Oklahoma State.
Last time out, Baylor beat a pair of top-50 teams and finished eighth out of 16 teams at the inaugural Michael A. Marino Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Appel and fellow senior Sam Dossey tied for 26th at 1-over-par 217 to lead the Bears.
Redshirt senior transfer Evan Vo from Auburn finished fourth at the PGA Tour of Americas Q School this past week at TPC Houston, shooting 9-under 63 in the second round and 18-under 270 for the 72-hole tournament that wrapped up Friday. Along with former Baylor golfer Trey Bosco (2020-24), who won a six-player playoff for the eighth spot, Vo earned his playing card for the PGA Tour of Americas.
"For Evan, this week was a culmination of some seriously hard work over the past nine to 12 months," Baylor interim head coach Ryan Murphy said. "I'm extremely proud of Evan, his dad (Derek), who rides and dies with his boys and his instructor Brech back in Austin. To say this was well-deserved is an understatement."
Appel shot 5-under 67 in the closing round and tied for 40th at 9-under 279, while former BU golfer Brandon Hoff shot 10-over and tied for 131st in the field of 155 players vying for the top eight spots.
Vo, Appel and Dossey head this week's lineup, followed by juniors Alex Heard and Davis Ovard, with freshman Tyler Sanford playing as an individual in just his second collegiate tournament. Sanford finished just outside the top 25 at the Bentwater Intercollegiate, shooting 1-under 70 in the second round and tying for 27th at 6-over 219.
