Bears drop 5-1 contest to end four-game winning streak

WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball saw its four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Tarleton State on Tuesday night with a 5-1 loss at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

The Bears (16-12) struck first on a 436-foot leadoff home run from redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders, but the Texans (20-8) responded with a three-run second inning to take control. TSU added runs in the fifth and seventh to extend the lead and pull away from BU.

Baylor's best chance came in the bottom of the fifth, when the Bears loaded the bases with just one out, but an inning-ending double play squandered the threat.

On the mound, senior LHP Stefan Stahl tossed a scoreless first inning with two strikeouts in his first appearance in over a month, while freshman righty Caldwell McFaddin and senior right-hander Grayson Murry added multi-strikeout outings in relief.

THE RUNDOWN
BU wasted no time in getting on the board, as Sanders delivered a solo shot on the third pitch he saw. The 436-foot blast, his third of the season, gave the Bears a quick 1-0 lead.

On the bump, Stahl was sharp from the start, retiring the Texans side in order on just 12 pitches with a pair of strikeouts. However, TSU took advantage of a pitching change and crushed a three-run homer in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

Things stayed quiet through the next two frames before the visitors added to their lead in the top of the fifth with a solo home run. BU threatened to answer in the home half, loading the bases with a walk and back-to-back singles, but an inning-ending double play kept the Bears off the scoreboard.

Tarleton State added another run in the top of the seventh, using a double and a bunt single to set up a run-scoring double play. That would be all, as both pitching staffs were sharp in the latter frames and things held steady at 5-1 as the Texans claimed their 20^th win of the season.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Eight Baylor pitchers combined to strikeout 11 batters, marking the eighth time this season that the Bears have fanned upwards of 10 in a single game.
• BU has now homered in six straight games, following redshirt junior INF Travis Sanders' leadoff blast.
• The leadoff homer was the second by a Bear this season, joining freshman OF Brady Janusek's Feb. 24 leadoff shot against SFA.
• The Bears added to their Big 12 lead in triples (11) with freshman Janusek's team-leading third three-bagger.
• Baylor turned its 27^th double play of the season, which ranks second in the Big 12.
• For Sanders, it was his third home run of the season, all of which have come in his last five games.
• Sanders extended his on-base streak to 31 games, tying for the 10^th longest such streak by a Bear since 2003.
• Sanders also extended his hitting streak to six games.
• Janusek extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games.
• Redshirt freshman INF Brytton Clements extended his hitting streak to six games.
• Sophomore INF Cade Dodson extended his on-base streak to six games, a season high.
• Redshirt sophomore C Brayden Buchanan extended his on-base streak to seven games, also a season high.
• Senior LHP Stefan Stahl made his first appearance since Feb. 27 vs. Ole Miss and pitched a clean first inning with two strikeouts, marking his third multi-strikeout appearance of the year.
• Redshirt freshman RHP Brayden Bergman recorded his ninth scoreless outing this season.
• Freshman RHP Caldwell McFaddin recorded his fourth multi-strikeout appearance of the year and tied his career high with two innings of work.
• Junior RHP Charlie Atkinson notched his seventh scoreless appearance of the 2026 campaign.
• Junior LHP RJ Ruais produced his 10^th scoreless outing of the year.
• Senior RHP Grayson Murry has struck out at least two batters four times this year and made his fifth scoreless appearance of the season.

STAT OF THE DAY
11 – Eight Baylor pitchers combined to strikeout 11 batters, marking the eighth time this season that the Bears have tallied double-digit strikeouts. Each BU pitcher that appeared struck out at least one batter.

On tonight's game…
"We just got beat. They beat us. We didn't kick it around, we didn't walk the world. We struck out a few too many times offensively, but sometimes you've got to give the other guys credit too. Tonight, we've got to swing the bats better. Sometimes that happens on a Tuesday following a big weekend and I didn't think that we were not ready to go, I think that we just got beat. They've got a good club, they're winning a lot of games. It's a well-coached team, they've got good arms and they came in here and played better than us tonight."

On Stefan Stahl's return to the mound…
"Well, the highlight for the night for me is that. You know, we'll be better on the mound and when we get him [fully] back, it'll give us another guy that we can count on. That was great to see. I thought his inning was very efficient. He looked sharp and threw the ball well. That was exciting to see and definitely the highlight for the night."

Baylor (16-12, 5-4) hosts BYU (13-14, 4-5) on Easter Weekend for a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series, kicking off on Thursday, April 2, at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6:30 p.m.
