Frogs steal game one of twin bill with late rally; Bears unable to respond in finale
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball dropped both ends of its Sunday doubleheader with TCU, 5-4 in the day's first game and 10-2 in the series finale, at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
BU (22-17, 9-9 Big 12) was six outs away from clinching the series and held a 4-0 lead in the eighth inning of game one before the Horned Frogs (24-15, 10-8 Big 12) rallied off fifth-year senior closer Caleb Bunch to steal the victory.
After the heartbreaker, the Bears were unable to respond in the night cap and fell in an eight-run game, leaving 10 runners stranded after a double-digit hitting performance.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Zack Wallace turned in a career-high 5.2 shutout innings and freshman outfielder Brady Janusek hit his ninth home run of the season in the first game, while redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong and freshman outfielder Dylan Perez each logged multi-hit games in the series finale.
THE RUNDOWN
GAME ONE
After TCU loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first inning, Wallace was able to dance out of danger with an inning-ending fielder's choice. Then, BU jumped out to the game's first lead by plating two in the home half. Redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders kickstarted the rally with a leadoff double, then scored on a passed ball after a walk and Janusek single loaded the bases. An RBI groundout by Perez made it 2-0 after the opening frame.
Both sides stayed quiet over the next three innings, as Wallace settled in and retired nine of 10 batters he faced from the second through the fourth. In the fifth, a leadoff single for the Frogs was erased on a lineout double play and brought the Bears back up to hit still leading by two.
That's when Janusek broke the silence with a two-run shot, his ninth of the year, to put Baylor ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
Wallace came back out to start the sixth and got two quick outs before exiting after a two-out walk. Junior right-hander Charlie Atkinson took over and threw the next 1.1 innings without surrendering a run.
In the eighth, BU turned to its stalwart closer Bunch to face the top of the TCU order. A leadoff single and walk preceded a three-run homer hit by Chase Brunson that got the Horned Frogs on the board, but Bunch was able to avoid further damage and kept his club in front after eight frames. However, TCU took advance of a trio of walks and a sacrifice bunt as Brunson came up again with the bases full of Frogs and delivered a two-run double to put the visitors ahead, 5-4.
Baylor went down in order in the bottom of the ninth as TCU evened the weekend series and stole the victory in the day's first contest.
GAME TWO
TCU plated the game's first run in the top of the first inning with a trio of hits, including an RBI single from Brunson, then doubled its lead with back-to-back two-baggers in the second to hold a 2-0 advantage through two innings.
The Bears were able to cut the deficit in half with knocks from Armstrong and Perez setting up a sacrifice fly from redshirt freshman designated hitter Hunter Snow that made it 2-1 in the fourth. A sac fly put the Frogs back up by two runs in the top of the fifth, then an RBI single and two-run blast broke it open at 6-1 in the sixth.
Senior right-hander Grayson Murry put up a zero in the seventh and redshirt freshman Brayden Bergman threw an impressive eighth with a strikeout to keep Baylor within arm's reach. The Bears loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but a strikeout ended the inning and got TCU out of harm's way.
A flurry of hits added four runs to the Horned Frogs' total in the ninth. Though BU got one back on an RBI double by sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock, the visitors were able to lock things down with a 10-2 victory, sweeping the doubleheader and clinching the weekend series.

On today's first game…
"The first seven innings of the game were fantastic and I thought our guys were really good. We competed really hard. I thought we got a great start from Zack Wallace and thought we pitched the ball well. Then in that eighth inning, they were at the top of the lineup, which is a really talented top of the lineup, there's no question about it. I just felt like we'd go to Caleb Bunch right there and not mess around. And I'd do that 100 times out of 100. It just didn't work out, Caleb wasn't as sharp today and that's tough. So, that first one was definitely a gut punch."
On the second game and weekend series as whole…
"We had our heart broken [in game one of the doubleheader] and had to show right back up. Doubleheaders are hard for that reason. It just kind of snowballed on us. It's frustrating and we're disappointed. We beat them pretty good the first game [on Friday], they beat us pretty good the last game, and the second game was a flip of a coin. For seven innings of it, we had them, but they ended up winning the ballgame. Give them credit, we're learning and making progress, but this one hurts."
