BU’s Creager works five scoreless innings of relief to preserve the win
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Baylor softball secured one of its strongest wins of the season Wednesday night, defeating Texas State, 4-3, at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
Facing a Bobcats squad that entered the day with an RPI of 30, the Bears used a four-run third inning and a series of standout defensive plays to hold off Texas State. The victory marks Baylor's best RPI win since topping No. 27 UCF on March 15.
Cambree Creager earned the win with 5.0 shutout innings in relief, allowing just three hits while stranding seven runners, getting out of two bases-loaded jams.
RUNDOWN
After Texas State struck first in the opening inning with a sacrifice fly, Baylor answered in a big way in the third.
With two outs, Sa'Mya Jones sparked the rally with a single before Amber Toven delivered an RBI triple to tie the game. Toven later scored on a wild pitch, and Leah Cran followed with a solo home run to left field. Faith Piper and Kaygen Marshall kept the inning alive with back-to-back hits, and the Bears capitalized on a Bobcat error to push the lead to 4-1.
The Bobcats responded in the bottom half, scoring twice and loading the bases with one out. Baylor's defense stepped up in a pivotal moment as Kaygen Marshall started a clutch double play to escape the jam and preserve the lead at 4-3.
Texas State threatened again in the fifth, loading the bases for the second time in the game. Once again, the Bears delivered defensively when Leah Cran cut down a runner at the plate on a heads-up play before retiring the side to maintain the one-run cushion.
From there, Baylor's pitching and defense took over. Cambree Creager entered in relief and shut the door, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings while working around traffic to keep Texas State off the board the rest of the way, leaving the tying run at third base on the game's final out.
