BU’s Tanner carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning
WACO, Texas – Baylor softball controlled the game for much of the night, but a four-run rally from No. 14 Oklahoma State resulted in a 4-2 loss Friday evening at Getterman Stadium.
The Bears carried a lead into the seventh inning behind a dominant performance in the circle from Peyton Tanner, who no-hit the Cowgirls through 4.2 innings.
But Tanner re-entered the game in relief, and OSU plated four runs in the final frame to walk away with game one of the series.
RUNDOWN
Baylor struck first in the opening inning as Brooklyn Carter singled and stole second before coming home on a sacrifice fly from Amber Toven to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
The game settled into a pitcher's duel from there, with Tanner in full command. The sophomore right-hander limited Oklahoma State to just two hits through the first five innings and worked around traffic to keep the Cowgirls off the board.
Baylor added to its lead in the fifth when Sa'Mya Jones singled and later scored on an RBI single from Toven, extending the advantage to 2-0.
After Tanner exited with two outs in the sixth, Cambree Creager entered in relief and worked out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve Baylor's lead heading into the seventh.
In the top of the seventh, Oklahoma State loaded the bases once again, prompting Baylor to turn back to Tanner.
After going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position to that point, the Cowgirls delivered their first hits of the day with ducks on the pond, as Rosie Davis singled to cut the BU lead in half at 2-1. Lexi McDonald tied the game with a SAC fly to right field, before Amanda Hasler broke it open with a two-RBI triple to make it 4-2.
Baylor hit a couple of balls hard in the seventh inning, but Oklahoma State closed out the win to open the series.
GAME NOTES
QUOTABLE
Glenn Moore on his message to the team after OSU's late rally — "We outplayed them for six innings and faced a pitcher that's been dominating a lot of the lineups, we just couldn't shut the door. This game isn't always fair, but it wasn't fair to Utah last weekend, so I made that reference. We came back and beat Utah in the same fashion that we lost this one today. Sometimes not fair, but you've got to bounce back and be a competitor and come out fighting and swinging. This team's done that all year, so that's what I expect out of them tomorrow. But I'm really proud of the girls and the way they fought and gave themselves a chance against that red-hot team."

Baylor will attempt to even the series in game two, beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon from Getterman Stadium.
