Bears unable to overcome eight late ASU runs in series finale
The Bears (22-21, 9-12 Big 12) hung tough against ASU in a one-run ballgame midway through the fifth, but couldn't overcome eight late runs scored by the Devils (31-14, 14-7 Big 12) who pulled away after another strong offensive performance.
Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong crushed his 15th and 16th home runs of the season and junior catcher JJ Kennett stayed hot with an RBI double, but BU struggled to get much more done at the plate against Arizona State's starter, Kole Klecker.
Senior southpaw Ethan Calder was tagged with the loss for the Bears after battling for most of his outing, but surrendered the crooked number in the fifth which chased him from the mound.
THE RUNDOWN
For the third-straight game, ASU got on the board first as the first two Sun Devils in the batting order each singled. After a fielder's choice gave the home side runners on the corners with one away, a BU error allowed a run to cross. But, a 6-4-3 double play got the Bears out of the inning and brought the green and gold back up to the plate, trailing by just a run.
That's when Armstrong launched one nearly 400 feet to the pull side, tying the game at 1-1 on his 15th blast of the season. Calder worked a quick 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the second, then BU threatened with two outs in the third as redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders singled and wheeled around to third on a pair of wild pitches. The Bears would leave him there, however, as Klecker picked up his third strikeout of the afternoon to end the top of the third.
Some freebies in the home half helped the Devils tack on two to their tally, as a hit-by-pitch, two singles, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly resulted in a 3-1 lead for ASU after three complete.
In the fourth, Kennett stayed hot with an RBI double to pull BU back within a run at 3-2. Calder worked out of danger in the bottom of the frame to keep the score a 3-2, as the Devils loaded the bases for leading hitter Landon Hairston, who bounced into the shift for an inning-ending groundout.
ASU broke it open in the bottom of the fifth with four runs coming on a two-run home run, a two-out RBI double and an RBI single that chased Calder from the ballgame. Another three crossed the plate in the sixth as a pair of walks, couple of singles and RBI fielder's choice swelled the scoreline to 10-2. Then, a solo home run in the eighth made it 11-2.
In the top of the ninth, Armstrong connected again for a two-run blast, his second of the day and 16th of the season, and BU got a few more aboard, but couldn't add any more to its total as Arizona State finished off the weekend sweep.
