BU’s Tanner turns in a second strong start against the 14th-ranked Cowgirls
WACO, Texas – Baylor softball battled for six innings behind another strong outing from Peyton Tanner, but another late rally by No. 14 Oklahoma State handed the Bears an 8-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium.
The Bears kept one of the nation's most potent offenses in check for much of the day, before the Cowgirls broke through in the seventh inning to pull away.
Baylor enters the final week of the regular season battling for one of the final spots at the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City. The Bears are one of four teams separated by just one game in the standings for spots No. 6-9 in Bricktown.
RUNDOWN
After two scoreless innings to open the contest, Oklahoma State scratched across two runs on a Baylor error, but some big-time defensive plays limited the damage and kept the game within reach.
Tanner settled in from there, navigating traffic and stranding runners throughout the middle innings. Through six frames, the Bears held the Cowgirls to just a 1-for-8 mark with runners in scoring position.
Baylor broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Ella Brown sparked the rally with a pinch-hit single before Brooklyn Carter moved into scoring position and came home on an RBI single from Sa'Mya Jones.
Trailing by just one entering the seventh, the Bears looked poised to complete the comeback, but Oklahoma State capitalized on its opportunities in the final frame. The Cowgirls strung together six runs on six hits, using a series of timely hits with runners aboard to extend the lead and secure the 8-1 victory.
GAME NOTES
QUOTABLE
Glenn Moore on making it a one-run game through six— "I think we ran out of gas. We don't have a lot of depth in our bullpen, and Peyton was out there pitching an outstanding game, giving us a chance, not only cut it in half, but if we get a ball one foot higher over the shortstop, then we'll go into the 7th inning in a lot better shape, and feeling better about ourselves. But the kids fought hard. That happened to us on Friday night, and that's what happens. You've got to have a little more depth in your bullpen. You've got to have people come out of your bullpen and perform for you, and in two games here, I thought we had a good shot at knocking them off, especially on Friday, but we competed well again today, so I'm proud of that. But the end result is a loss, and we need wins right now."
Moore on Tanner's performances this weekend — "It's promising for our future. To compete against an offense like that that has been putting up runs against good pitching for the last couple of weeks is something to build on. Take that as you want to take it, but from our perspective, we're seeing a kid that's going to win a lot of games before her career is over. But the game can be bitter sometimes, and it was for her this weekend."
