Bears in seventh place after two solid rounds at Prairie Dunes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – UConn transfer Alex Heard, the medalist at last year's Big East tournament, fired back-to-back rounds of 1-under 69 on Monday and is tied for seventh at the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

Avoiding the big numbers, Baylor shot 5-over 285 in the morning round and came back with a 4-over 284 to sit in seventh place at 9-over 569 through the first 36 holes, in front of four top-50 teams in the 16-team tournament.

Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State created some separation with a second-round score of 13-under 267 that leaves the Cowboys seven shots ahead of 20^th-ranked Arizona at 14-under 546. Sixth-ranked Texas Tech is third at 1-under 559, followed by TCU (1-over, 561), BYU (2-over, 562) and UCF (7-over, 567).

Heard carded six birdies, 28 pars and only four bogeys combined in Monday's two rounds, keeping him in the medalist hunt at 2-under 138, just six shots back of Oklahoma State's Preston Stout.

At the halfway mark, Jonas Appel and Davis Ovard are tied for 33^rd at 3-over 143, with Auburn transfer Evan Vo tied for 42^nd at 5-over 145. Ovard had four birdies in an opening-round 69, while Appel birdied his penultimate hole to shoot 2-over 71 in the afternoon.

Subbing in for Sam Dossey in the second round, sophomore Vincent Stjernfeldt was even par through his first nine holes before a triple bogey at the par-4 8^th hole and three bogeys in the closing stretch to shoot 6-over 75.

Paired with BYU, UCF and Iowa State, Baylor will start on the front nine with tee times starting at 10 a.m. Live scoring is available at Big 12 Championship.

At a local qualifier for the U.S. Open, Baylor freshman Patrick Babb shot 3-under-par 67 on the Bears' home course at Ridgewood Country Club and finished second in the field of 120 players to earn one of six qualifying spots. Babb advances to the next round for the sectional qualifier on May 18 at Dallas Athletic Club.
