Bears erase six-run deficit, but fall on walk-off home run in extra innings
Down to their last strike in the top of the ninth, the Bears (29-27) got a game-tying, two-run single from sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock to cap off the come-from-behind effort, knotting the scoreline at 7-7 after being down 7-1.
After a bevy of substitutions and position changes that included fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson playing first base and sophomore right-handed pitcher Camden Clewett getting his first-career at-bat and playing parts of three innings behind the plate, KU (40-16) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th to advance to the conference tournament semifinals.
Sophomore right-hander Zack Wallace did his best to match KU ace Dominic Voegele in an early pitcher's duel, but was tagged for four runs in the fifth to be chased from the mound in a 6-0 ballgame. That's when the tides started to change, as BU put up a tally in the seventh, four in the eighth and two in the ninth to tie it before the walk-off blast.
THE RUNDOWN
A two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning got the Jayhawks on the board first, but aside from that Wallace and Voegele dueled through the first four frames. Wallace racked up four strikeouts and had been tagged for just three hits, including the home run, to keep BU within striking distance in the early going.
However, the Bears couldn't solve Voegele as they had just one hit through the first four frames courtesy of a Riebock fourth-inning single. Aside from a pair of hit batsmen, Baylor didn't have much other traffic on the bases its first two trips through the lineup. Freshman infielder Cole Lanclos singled with two outs in the top of the fifth, but he'd be left on base as well following a groundout that ended the inning.
That's when KU opened things up, as the Jayhawks scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth, including back-to-back solo home runs. After Wallace exited, a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch accounted for the other tallies in the frame and extended the league champion's advantage to 6-0.
Baylor pushed one across in the top of the seventh as Johnson delivered an RBI double, getting the Bears on the board at 6-1. But an RBI single from Savion Flowers, a substitute outfielder with just 10 at-bats on the year, put Kansas back in front by six in the bottom half.
To start the eighth, a pair of walks sandwiched a Brady Janusek single and loaded the bases for redshirt freshman designated hitter Brytton Clements. Clements, who was 0-for-3 to that point, shot a double to the right-center gap and chased in two runs to give the Bears some life, down 7-3. After a pitching change, freshman outfielder Dylan Perez grounded one sharply off the first baseman's glove for a two-run error, bringing BU within two at 7-5.
Junior southpaw RJ Ruais came on to strike out the side in the home half of the eighth, giving Baylor momentum coming back to hit in what could've been its final trip to the plate. It was Lanclos again to ignite things with his second knock of the day, then a walk and wild pitch gave the Bears two runners in scoring position with two down. Riebock fell behind in the count 0-2, but singled sharply into right field to bring Lanclos and pinch-runner Bo Caraway around from second, tying the game at 7-7.
BU then turned to fifth-year senior closer Caleb Bunch who got three quick outs and sent the game to extra frames. However, the Bears went down in order in the top half and then Bunch surrendered the walk-off homer to Flowers, his first extra-base hit of the season, to lead off the home half and send the Jayhawks through to the semifinals.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today's ballgame…
"Really proud of our team. Really proud of the effort of the guys, all year long. They showed tremendous fight today against an outstanding team. Dominic Voegele was fantastic early and didn't give us much room to breathe. Then, we got back in the game and all of a sudden there you go. It's something that I've kind of come to expect from these guys, but it's still fun to see. It's fun to see the fight and the competitiveness. Really good ballgame. I thought Kansas played really well, made a lot of really tough plays defensively. And our guys competed their tails off. Very proud of our effort. That's just what happens sometimes when you play the best team in our conference, you both show up and they score one more than you do."
Redshirt Senior 1B Tyce Armstrong
On his season in the green and gold…
"This has been the best year of my life, no contest. To finish it like that, we were fighting and just came up short, it just exemplifies our team and shows that we never gave up. We've had times during the year when it's been hard on us. We've dealt with a lot of injuries. To see the guys excited going into the 10th inning of the game and guys who didn't play all year getting at-bats, it was just really cool to watch that and see everybody up in the dugout. It's been an awesome ride for me."
Fifth-Year Senior OF Ty Johnson
On what it has meant to him to be a Baylor Bear…
"These past three years have truly been the best years of my life. I'm truly a changed person because I'm a Baylor Bear. This program is on the rise, it's growing, there's belief – just look at the last three games we've played. Just fighting it out, pitch by pitch, inning by inning, that doesn't happen without true belief in the program. I truly think that's what Coach Thompson and this staff are working towards. This is a program on the rise and I'm happy that I've gotten to be a part of it for the last three years, bringing Baylor Baseball back to what it has been and what it needs to be. Personally, it has truly changed my life. Coach Thompson taking a chance on me out of JUCO, I'm super thankful. Words can't really describe it."
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
After hearing Tyce and Ty's answers…
"Hearing guys say "changed their life," that's what it's about. I love these guys. I love the team. Some of them drive me crazy, but I love them. I love their fight. I love their competitiveness. If you would have told me we'd be playing the number one team in the conference and played their pants off and we've got Cam Clewett behind the plate, we've got Ty Johnson at first base, Cole Lanclos at third – Cole hadn't played an inning until four or five weeks ago and he's forced in there and he's played well. He gets two hits against arguably one of the best guys in the conference. Then to hear these guys talk about their experience here, that's what separates us and makes Baylor special. Our coaches and the people who pour into these guys, I love every one of them. And I'm a little emotional about that too. We missed Coach Jim Blair today because of a family emergency. We're lifting him and his family up in prayer."
