Li, Ohma “gut out” 1-over-par 73s to help BU stay in the hunt
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 2 RESULTS
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Playing in much tougher and windier conditions in Saturday's second round of the NCAA Championship, the Baylor women's golf team shot 11-over 299 and fell nine spots to a tie for 20th going into a pivotal third round at La Costa Resort and Spa.
Yurang Li followed up a 3-under 69 with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 16th at 2-under 142, just four off the pace set by 36-hole leaders Farah O'Keefe of Texas, Kajsalotta Svarvar of Ole Miss and Stanford's Mega Ortengren at 6-under 138.
Other than senior Silje Ohma, who matched Li's 1-over 73, the Bears' counting scores were Bridget Boczar and Charlotte Brook at 76 and 77, respectively. Ohma got it to 1-under with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 6 and 7, but bogeyed the last two holes of the day.
"I didn't feel like my long shots were the best," said Ohma, who is tied for 64th at 3-over 147. "But around the greens and on the green, it was really good. So, I gained some shots there, for sure. I had a great approach shot on 7, which made it easy to make a birdie when your putt is a foot."
Ohma said she "holed a putt on 6" before hitting the middle of the pin with an approach shot on the par-4 7th hole and tapping in for her team-best third birdie of the day.
"She was tough today," Baylor coach Jay Goble said. "I know she didn't end up finishing the last two holes the way she wanted, but shooting 73 out here in the afternoon is a very good score. I'm so proud of her."
Bouncing back from a stretch where she carded three bogeys in six holes, Boczar birdied the par-3 eighth hole and is 6-over 150 through the first 36 holes. Unable to get her putter going, Brook parred her last seven holes after starting out 5-over through the first 11 and goes into the third round at 5-over 149.
At 12-over 588, the Bears are tied for 20th with Auburn and Virginia and two shots below the projected cut line, with the field trimmed from 30 to the low 15 teams after Sunday's third round. Tennessee, Texas A&M and Florida State are tied for 15th at 10-over 586.
"We can't control what other teams are going to do tomorrow," Ohma said. "I'm sure they all say they want to be in the 15. So, we just have to continue playing our game. And if that's good enough, that would be great. If it's not, we can't control anything more than one shot at a time."
Goble said what makes it difficult to climb the ladder and get into the top 15 is playing in the afternoon again, "which is the windy, tough conditions."
"You're going to have 10 to 15 mph cross winds all day, and it makes the golf course challenging," Goble said. "We're going to go back and do what we always do, look at our pins, come up with our plan, do some recovery and get ready for a big day tomorrow."
Paired with Wake Forest and Auburn, the Bears will go off the No. 10 on Sunday with tee times starting at 12:12 p.m. PT (2:12 p.m. central).
